Do people who say "children should choose their own beliefs REALLY believe that? So, if a 2 year old wants to believe a boiling pot of water will feel good when they pour it on thier head, they should believe that and be allowed to act on that belief? That is what "allowing kids to choose their own beliefs" really boils down to (pun intended).

Wow, wow, wow, no one ever said you should be allowed to act on all of your beliefs, that's just fucking stupid. Even though the bible says you should stone your kids to death for insolence, you get locked up for life for it.
Yeah, kids should be protected from any and all religious indoctrination until they're old enough to recognize it for the bullshit it is.
Whaddya mean "That's not what I meant!"?
Because, as long as he doesn't consumate the action and doesn't commit a crime, the same law that protects him to believe that nonsense, protects you too to believe your own stupidness(as your post has demonstrated). It's called first ammendment, and it's there to protect the interest of the people, to judge the action, not the belief(whatever it is). And of course, they're neither there to evaluate the degree of nonsense of the belief. Otherwise, Jehowah Witnesses would be out of the list long ago.
Well, if that two year old is one of the evil nazi satanic babies, they probably deserve it, don't they?

Thank you for seeing the value of empirical testing and the need for evidence to support belief. Now that you have just opened up your own beliefs to empirical testing, good luck with that.

What the fuck is this? I thought the FSTDT community was fairly tolerant. Now I turn up and see all this hurtful bigoted bullshit. As a recent convent to the First International Church of Boiling Water, I find this cynicism insulting in the extreme.
You people are lost, and need to accept Christ's scalding for the good of your immortal souls. When the rapture comes, only those running their burnt parts under the cold tap will be taken to Heaven. All others will be condemned to the devil's tepid Hell to shiver slightly for all eternity.
There are other ways to teach a child that your stupid example is a bad idea.
And besides, "hot = bad" is a much easier concept to grasp than "the invisible lord and savior will watch you when you think you're alone and judge you when you're dead so you better be good or else."
f a 2 year old wants to believe a boiling pot of water will feel good when they pour it on thier head, they should believe that and be allowed to act on that belief?
No, but neither should they take it on faith. Show the child it's hot, don't just tell him it's hot because "I said so".

Oooohhh funny guy..... youse so smart!11!!!!
No letting a child choose their own beliefs is about not shoving your religion down their throats and telling them they're going to hell for just being kids. Let kids be kids! But fundies see stuff like "make believe" as evil and wicked. So they beat their children for it. But if the child lies and tells you that he sees angels and Jesus, then he gets hugs and cookies.
Not quite, they can think the boiling water is nice, but as responible parents, we warn them that it won't be pleasant. After that they can make an informed decision. But really, any cristian sect compares well to that boiling water.
Actually, this is the problem I have with fundies. They want to pour the water on everyone's head and think they have the right to.
I just watched this:

Indoctrinate them early and often! Remember, they could die any time and be sent to hell by our kind and loving god.
When they hit their teens, you'll flip out when they reject your bullshit and choose their own...anyway.
Um.. metaphysical beliefs, idiot.
And actually, maybe atheists should give up our long-standing paranoia against indoctrination, and let our kids know what we believe (because as they grow up, everyone else will)
PS Do I need to mention Mark 16:18 again? You might as well worship a god who commands you to pour boiling water on their heads.
A kid asks you why pulling a pot down is bad, and you can tell them because it's hot. You can even hold their hand over the pot to prove it. You can show him/her pictured of people who were scarred for life for doing the same.
When it comes to religion, all you can do is scream BECAUSE I SAID SO!
a child's "beliefs" I can understand where they come from, an adults "beliefs" of a similar nativity & stupidity I cannot.
fundamentalists delenda est
Well it would certainly teach the kid a harsh lesson about "believing hard enough" being the answer to everything...
But then wouldn't a competant and loving parent not have taught their kid such a moronic lesson in the first place?
Now children, take a lesson from a master, this guy really knows how to take shit out of context. I own up, I am impressed, I never thought someone that stupid would be capable of typing, or talking, or eating for that matter. My hat goes off to you, life really must be a struggle sometimes.
No that's not what we mean. We mean you should quit filling their heads full of religious crap!
We just wish you would always do what's best for your child.
Religion's not good for anybody.
A two-year-old doesn't have a concept of cause and effect; he or she don't know what happens when you pour hot water on yourself.
Is that all belief is to you? Lack of experience and immediate action/reaction?
I bet the belief spoken of here is belief-system, world-view, faith. But maybe that's too complicated for you to grasp?
they are allowed to believe that, but they are not allowed to pour boiling water over their heads.
In any case, a two year old is too young to understand what will happen if they pour boiling water over their heads, that's why we keep an eye on them until they are old enough to understand.
They mean beliefs in the absence of facts, you dimwitted fool. A boiling pot of water will scald you; that's a fact, not a belief. Kids should be able to choose whether to believe in gods or not, THAT is what "allowing kids to choose their own beliefs" really boils down to. Oh, and that was a very feeble pun, Timmy-boy.
Confused?
