@Warren McIntosh, and everyone else:
Albertan here. It's not even that. For some more context, Rachel Notley is part of the New Democratic Party (NDP), which is the most left-wing party of all the mainstream political parties in Canada, and prior to Alberta's 2015 election, the Conservatives (basically GOP Lite) had been in power for 44 unbroken years. After so long in power, they'd gotten hugely corrupt and woefully incompetent, and that's probably the only reason Notley's NDP government got elected. (The Liberal Party, more centrist, was totally unprepared for the election and had zero chance, and the only other major party in Alberta, the Wildrose, is even more right wing, and they still ended up forming the official opposition.)
I've always called my province the Texas of Canada, since Albertans have (until recently) always elected the same right-wing party into the Legislature again and again, without question and despite massive fuck-ups (and because we have an abundance of oil and religious nuts), and this submission here is only feeding into that image I have. There's such a strong culture of right-wing politics here that Notley's left-wing government was almost immediately getting attacked and demonized, well before she even had a chance to really do anything (as an example, the Conservatives and the Wildrose were trying to lay the blame for our slumping economy, intimately tied to the price of oil, solely at Notley's feet, despite international facors affecting the price of oil that she clearly has no control of or influence over, whatsoever).
Basically, Alberta is so right-wing that the moment a left-wing party got elected last year, everyone began shitting themselves, and for some, apparently, this hasn't stopped yet.
Anyway, I've ranted enough. I hope this provides some context and helps you guys understand our stupid political atmosphere a little bit more.
