MAD worked with the Soviet Union, but the terroists are neither rational nor sane. So why wait for them to attack first. Maybe we should just go ahead and nuke Mecca and send a message. Since it will create a firestorm, we might as well nuke Iran and Syria while we're on a roll and put the rest of the muslim terrorists on notice. Pain and death really seems to be the only thing they comprehend

[sarcasm]And while we're at it, we minus well nuke the U.S. as well, considering that the muslim citizens here will also create an uproar in case of such an event. but wait, let's not stop there: let's also nuke the U.K. and France, considering they have muslim citizens as well. You know what? How about we just turn every country with a muslim citizen into a nuclear wasteland? Yeah, it makes total sense now![/sarcasm]
...Idiot....
Sure, go ahead. Do it, without a second of thought! Then watch as every other nuclear force in the world retaliates on the USA and each other. Russia, China, India, Pakistan, Israel, UK, France... did I left somebody out?
Ah, yes. Even North Korea with their limited arsenal will use it to help make the "blue marble" into smoking marble.

Fundie in a nutshell. Also, lousy grammar fixed.
"MAD" in this context refers to "Mutually Assured Destruction".
In a Cold War context, it referred to the belief that neither the US or the USSR would be willing to start a nuclear war, because the end result would be the annihilation of both sides. This was one the reasons for oppsing SDI aka "Star Wars" - if the US could complete a working system, they could survive a nuclear war, and the USSR might view it as "we should launch an attack before the US has a working system."
From a purely strategic standpoint, MAD does not apply to the war on terror, because terrorists don't have the capability to launch an attack that would wipe out the US. Even if they had nuclear weapons, they don't have anywhere near the amount it would take to wipe out America. They could really mess up a few cities, at most. Plus, many terrorists are willing to die for their cause, so they wouldn't fear a nuclear attack.
Now, the morality of using nukes to fight terrorists is another story, and the fact that nuking Mecca would basically make the Islamic world into the massive anti-American was machine Islamophobes now portray it as is a major argument against such a move, but the poster is right -- MAD worked agains the USSR, but does not apply to fighting terrorists.
Confused?
