Nowhere is artificial birth control permitted in scripture, absolutely right IAA. .
The ONE CLEAR ATTEMPT at artificial birth control was met with DEATH at God's hand.
No postive statements regarding artificial brith control in support of it in the scriptures - - NOT ONE!
One VERY NEGATIVE statement AGAINST artificial birth control by God Himself.

While I hate to defend fundies, here are there verses this person is thinking of...
And Er, Judah's firstborn, was wicked in the sight of the LORD; and the LORD slew him. And Judah said unto Onan, Go in unto thy brother's wife, and marry her, and raise up seed to thy brother. And Onan knew that the seed should not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in unto his brother's wife, that he spilled it on the ground, lest that he should give seed to his brother. And the thing which he did displeased the LORD: wherefore he slew him also. (Genisis 38:7-10)
Chapter and verse or it didn't happen?
If there's a chapter and verse, it's far less likely to have happened, IMO.
D'oh! Eric the Blue beat me to it. :(
Nevertheless, Onan was killed because he did everything in his power to avoid performing his brotherly duties as commanded by God . In those days, if a man died, it was his brother's obligation to marry his wife and produce a child in his stead. The child (if a boy) would be named after the man, not the brother who actually created it. Onan did not want to and so used the withdrawal method to avoid impregnating his SiL (with surprising success). Then God found out and slew him.
C'mon. God doesn't like birth control because it can prevent the creation of new souls for his satan's barbeque. "Every sperm is sacred" to god because there is great suffering and bloodshed to be had from every new human.
When David knocked up Bathsheba, who did god punish? First god had his son rape David's wives , don't know if his own mother was amongst them, while David watched. THEN, god waited till D and B's child was born, made it sick, and it died. David's punishment? One of god's favourites.
So why would I give a fuck about what your imaginary friend thinks about rubbers?

If Onan got a son with his dead brother's wife then Onan wouldn't get the inheritance. With his brother dead he was the oldest son, but with an heir for his brother he would get all the benefits of being the oldest son. Onan probably didn't care about the whole bloodline thing, but being firstborn and getting (almost?) everything or getting (almost?) nothing is a pretty compelling reason to make sure your brother doesn't have an heir.

There aren't any passages for it or against it. That thing about Onan getting slain by the lord was because he didn't do as he was told. The lord doesn't specificly mention birth control. Nowhere does the bible say that you shouldn't take the pill. Likewise, there aren't any passages in there against condoms, IUD's or the rhythm method ( just off the top of my head ).
I think thereselittleflower is reading what he wants to see into the bible.
By the way, my parents used birth-control(the one authorised by the Vatican, ok, but birth control anyway)and many of my friends are using artificial and natural ones. They're all alive, and not likely to die.
Actually, there WERE artificial methods of birth control in use during biblical times. (For example, contraceptive sponges made mainly of crocodile dung were popular in Egypt.) There were also methods to induce abortion. The fact that neither were prohibited in the bible though they were widely known leads me to believe that no one really considered them a big deal until the fundies arose out of the Victorian era.
tlf seems to support the "christian" pharmacists' refusal to dispense contraceptives.
My opinion is, either you do your job as a pharmer, or get another job. Your belief system has no place in someone else's health/life decisions.

Nowhere are hospitals, aircraft or printed Bibles allowed in scripture.
Atop the temple, Jesus himself refused to fly.
No postive statements regarding hospitals, aircraft or printed Bibles are in the scriptures - - NOT ONE!
Therese. Little Flower.
Therese == the new Goatse?
Gaaaaah. I hate people who try and justify not being able to keep their pants on / keep their husband away from their pants by saying "God wanted me to keeep having keeds! God hates condoms!" It's stupid and it's a horrible way to think!
Coitus interruptus is hardly "artificial" birth control, and that isn't what Onan was being punished for anyway. There wasn't any artificial birth control when the scriptures were written, so it could hardly be discussed in the Bible, could it?
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say that the reason birth control wasn't mentioned in the Bible was probably the same reason that automobiles, baseball, and lightbulbs weren't mentioned either. It's hard to write about something that no one has thought up yet.
Tell you what: next time I reach for a condom or go to the doctor to extend my pill prescription, just have your precious God come down and tell me, "Shame on you, don't do that." Just once. A sign. Anything. If he's so real and so dead against it, how come I never hear him actually object?
Of course there are also verses that say that you shouldn't judge others but let God do it. So, hell for you. And for me because I am judging you as well, but there were a lot of other reasons for that anyway.
I'm still trying to find a method of 'artificial birth control' in the Bible.
Reading... reading... reading...
Nope, not in there. I see an instance of pulling out, but that's not 'artificial,' is it?
thereselittleflower: Fail
Little Blue Pill: Win
God didn't kill Onan because Onan blew his nut on the ground, he killed Onan because Onan disobeyed him.
(And probably because he didn't even have the common courtesy to lay a blanket down first.)

"Nowhere is artificial birth control permitted in scripture..."
Ah, but where is it prohibited by scipture? C'mon, chapter and verse, out with it.
But, the passage was a proactive attempt by a man, and was also disobeying an order from his leader, and not doing his duty given by God to carry on the bloodline. I think the real point of the passage was disobedience in this matter was death, and he spilled his seed, so to speak, rather than lying with the woman as was ordered.
Aside from the whole subservience to thine husband nonsense, the Bible actually has little to say about "women's issues," like child bearing and pregnancy. The only verse that comes close is one in Exodus (Exodus 21:22-25,) wherein men who harm a woman until she miscarried were fined, while if they killed the woman or greviously injured her these injuries or her death would be repaid in kind.
In these communities, such things were women's issues and were left out of this text. Any pro-life or anti-BC passage from the Bible is likely just a misunderstanding or warping of the point of the text, rather than an actual mandate from their religious leaders. Selective quoting is evil. The horrible translations don't help either.
No postive statements regarding computers in the scriptures - - NOT ONE!
Because of that, with your logic, God is against computers. You'd better get off those Forums if you want to save your souls.

As for the existence/nonexistence of birth control in the ancient world: If you ask the right people, you can get an argument started over that. There's a whole controversy about the surprisingly low birthrate in ancient Rome, the use of the extinct (?) herb silphium as a contraceptive, etc. etc.
Confused?
