One could argue whatever one likes, but the evidence favours the view that science would not exist if it were not for Christianity.

Modern science would have been squashed by the CHRISTIAN INQUISITION if you could truly hold knowledge back via draconian bibble humping.
Fortunately, there will always be a few brave people that are willing to say "YOU ARE WRONG!"
Mr. Rayment,
Your claim carries the same intellectual weight, maturity and validity as the claim of a five year old to his peers boasting that "my dad knows everything." Your ignorance of the history of the pursuit of knowledge is profound. Take a history of science course and come back later.
Then why did Christianity abandon Science? Science is standing here, arms crossed, tapping its foot, waiting for your answer...
Much as I hate to admit it, there is a certain amount of truth in this, although it's being rather misrepresented.
Back during the Roman Empire, the scientific advancements made by the Greeks were all but undone, with the Muslims carrying on their scientific legacy. Fast forward a few centuries, though, and you see the Muslim population in the Middle East degrading into the theocracy we see today.
There was really only a handful if bastions of science left, certain cities in Spain. These cities, historically under Muslim control, were taken over by the Christians during the Crusades, and the knowledge found there played a massive role in the ensuing Renaissance.
To an extent, therefore, one might argue that without the fundamentalism of the Crusades, science as we know it might never have come into being.

Well it's more down to skeptical thiking & opposing views pushed science forward, i wouldn't say it was all thanks to Christians that science exists... But then, neither are you, so never mind ^_^
Science existed before we were human. Millions of years ago a little hominid sat on its backside on the dusty African plain and sharpened a stick. It learned by trial and error how to do so efficiently, which variety of wood worked best, and how it could be used to secure food by digging or spearing. That little creature with a brain the size of a tangerine did more, better, and more worthwhile science in 15 minutes than all creationists together have achieved in 15 years.

NO. JUST NO.

True, the crusades and monasteries guarded and spread knowledge to some degree; but the ones who were blocking science were the dark age CHRISTIAN fundies to begin with.
If there hadn't been 7+ centuries of CHRISTIAN dark ages, our scientifical advances would be much much higher and a lot of bloodshed would have been spared.
In other words, FAIL, World History doesn't agree with you.
Mapping the stars and planets (the ones that we could observed and were named before the Bible appeared)
High math, architectual design and Medicine all do also
And Christians were against it most the time
The Middle Age and the Middle East want to talk with you. And the Egyptians, the Romans and the Greeks.
Have a nice chat, Philly.
Yes... yes, the science we know today was originally fostered by christian patronage for precisely the same reasons that anyone would patron the sciences. Science provides knowledge, and knowledge is equitable with power.
Meaning that even without christianity, science would likely have found a substitute source of support (which might have been even more favorable to it by not requiring that it comply with rigid dogma).
Gotta love these silly people...
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
