When I came to Christ, (while getting rid of my large beloved movie collection) the hardest thing for me to do was to give up my Star Trek. Why did I let it go? Something dawned on me... the peaceful, no disease, no war, no money bliss of the Federation was ultimately an illusion even to the characters on the show. If you're as big a fan as I was, you'll remember the large quantities of profanity used by nearly every one of the cast in every installment. Kirk and Picard loved to take the Lord's name in vain and when Data or Spock used profanity, it was all a big laugh... just as it was to the world watching. This wasn't civilized mature behavior.

Spock cursed in 1 - ONE - film. I think he said "hell",
Kirk said dipshit, but never, as I recall the films, used the lord's name in vain.
Dr. McCoy may have, in one film.
You are a gawd-damned liar!
Bones: He's fuckin' dead, Jim.
Captain Kirk: Jesus fuckin Christ Spock, have you identified the source of the contamination yet?
Spock: Logically speaking Captain, we all appear to be fucked.
Seriously, I can't remember any real profanity in the original star trek, let alone even the lawd's name being mentioned at all.
I think I missed the episodes where starfleet crewmembers swore like salty sailors. Beyond a few damns and hells and one or two films where a couple of people said "Shit," I don't remember much cussing.
Sure it was Star Trek you were watching?

Holy shit, say whut now?
I've been a life-long Trekkie and, frankly, I think you're full of shit.
I grew up with The Original Series and I've never once heard them use a profanity (they wouldn't have allowed it anyway in the '60s broadcasting anyway). The most I've heard them say was "Damn it", not "God damn it".
Indeed, I recall that in at least two episodes of TOS there were dealings with Christianity . For example, a computer programed not to kill "because it goes against the laws of man and god." And in the episode Bread and Circuses, a planet's civilization mirrored a modern Rome with an outgrowing of Christianity.
even when you get to the more gritty series, Deep Space Nine, there was still very little, if any, swearing of any kind. Cardassian attacks, Klingon attacks, Dominion attacks, all went down without so much as a noticeable cussword.
Now, will you please point out where I can find this foul-mouthed Star Trek?
Admit it. You were never a fan of Star Trek.
You may have confused this series with StarWars.
No, the dialogue in the latter was pretty bland, too. How about The Matrix? Starship Troopers? Alien? ThumbWars? Robot Chicken?
Hell tends to be the most common "swear" word on Trek, so by comparison Trek is pretty mild when it comes to swearing.
@Evergreen
The main Klingon insult is petaQ, which kind of translates to useless, garbage, et. al., though it's intensity is ambiguous.
@Mr.BadAxe
Spoonhead is probably the most famous racial slur on Star Trek, although Garak used "pointy eared friend" to describe a Romulan, and Enabran Tain said that was a slur. Pinkskin appeared to start out as an insult or slur by Andorians towards humans, but it may have lost its edge overtime (Shran's kid calls Archer a pinkskin and he doesn't seem insulted). The word nigger was used once in Trek history in "Far Beyond the Stars" but it wasn't being used as an insult rather the kid was expressing a belief that even if humans traveled in space black people wouldn't get to be captains. Finally "Abraham Lincoln" used the term "negress" to describe Uhura, but it was the 60s, so it was ok back then.
Worf: Klingon, motherfucker, can you speak it?
Hmmmm...
Riker: You want that phaser, hillbilly?
Romulan: Step aside, Riker.
*boom*
Riker: So what now?
Romulan: What now? I'm gonna call a coupla pipe-hittin' Klingons, who'll go to work on homes here with a pair of alluvial dampers and a level 2 phaser. Hear me talkin, hillbilly? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'm gonna get pre-logic Vulcan on your ass.
As a Trekkie myself I can state quite categorically that you're a damned liar. There was very little, if any profanity in Star Trek, and what little there was was in the movies.
So, before you pretend to be a Trekkie, figure out what you're talking about!
My guess would be Chick tracts. This person either a, didn't watch Star Trek; or b, Lying For Jesus; or c, Both
Since when is there no war or disease on Star Trek? I recall several episodes where there was a deadly outbreak of something or they were having a conflict with one of the eight billion other races.
You've never seen an episode in your life, have you?
You idiot! Star Trek is the *real* scriptures!! Revealed to us by devine prophets!!
Oh man, you are so going to burn for abandoning the true faith =\
I recall Bones calling Spock "that green blooded sonofabitch" in one of the movies.
That aside, it's known that Gene Roddenberry was a humanist who disdained religion - I believe he once said "there are no chaplains on the Enterprise."
This wasn't civilized mature behavior.
I... am flabbergasted. Which part wasn't 'civilised, mature behaviour' - the lies throughout this post? The pointless waste of a perfectly good film collection? The behaviour of this... person?
A few clues that he's lying:
1) The only 'swear words' used in the original Star Trek series were "damn" (not goddamn, just damn) and "hell." That's pretty much been the same for all the ST series, in fact.
2) While there were a few (3 or 4) profanities in the movies, they never once "took the Lord's name in vain."
3) Data was not in the original Star Trek, and the other characters he mentions are not in the later series.
I learned all this from my wife. Yay, geekdom.
Well, there were a few "damns" and "hells" thrown around (albeit rarely), and a couple of "shits" (although one was in French). And McCoy did say "goddamn" once in STII:TWOK.
That being said...you're still an idiot.
Of all the messed-up things in the human sphere of influence, you choose to get upset over "One damned minute, Admiral?"
How very full your life mustn't be.
I think you all are forgetting that fundies equate "Good God" as a swear and taking the lord's name in vain. This is said by Picard multiple times in the series.
On a side note, most fundies dont understand what taking god's name in vain means.
"God Gammit!" Is not taking his name in vain. Nither is "Jesus Tittyfucking Christ nailed to a two by four by midgets in robots dancing the chacha!"
Taking a name in vain means trivializing by false promise.
"If you belive in Jesus then you will get icecream every day and learn to fly through the power of thought." is taking god's name in vain.
In short, Joseph Schmidt, you are a fucking liar and bullshit artist! YOu and every fundie like you. Only a loser fundie like you would ever, EVER, think of Star Trek as a bad thing.
what about Star Wars? oh, wait, I know, it's dvilish! Even worse than Star Trek!
Actually, I thought I remember Kirk praying - no, I don't, just kiddin'!
"the peaceful, no disease, no war, no money bliss of the Federation was ultimately an illusion even to the characters on the show."
Actually ... there's some truth to this. The Utopia that was Star Trek: The Next Generation for the first couple of seasons seemed to be more wishful thinking on Roddenberry's part than a realistic projection of the future.
And, of course, when Roddenberry stepped down and and Berman and Braga took over, we started seeing the seamier side of the Federation and realizing that it wasn't all the sweetness and light we'd been seeing before. (Deep Space Nine even reintroduced money in the form of gold-press latinum.)
It's too bad that Joseph Schmidt took an honest, critical observation like this one, and turned it into an excuse to bash the show for saying swear words.
Profanity no, I'm a doctor quotes yes.
1 McCoy "What am I, a doctor or a moon shuttle conductor?" The Corbomite Maneuver
2 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a bricklayer!" The Devil in the Dark
3 McCoy "I'm a surgeon, not a psychiatrist!" The City on the Edge of Forever
4 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a mechanic!" The Doomsday Machine
5 McCoy "I'm not a scientist or a physicist, Mr. Spock..." Metamorphosis
6 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a escalator!" Friday's Child
7 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a magician!" The Deadly Years
8 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a flesh peddler!" Return to Tomorrow
9 McCoy "I'm a doctor, not a coal miner!" The Empath
I'm new to Star Trek but of the Next Generation episodes I saw
Wars were referenced and battles were fought
The Ferengi were obsessed with profits and money
Many episodes had members being sick, some even had diseases
And little to no profanity
Though I need to watch more original series and the other series that came after TNG I suspect there is no or little profanity and same issues I mentioned
Confused?
