If the Bible actually said any of this, the Bible would be incredible. Sadly, the Bible only "said" (by way of its followers) any of this after secular science already realised its mistakes.

Lyell was a firmly Christian geologist. The geologist Hutton pissed off the folks who believed that all rocks were created during a great flood, but neither could be considered an "evolutionist."
Where in the Bible are millions of stars mentioned? As far as I can tell, the largest number mentioned in the Bible is a "thousand thousand," one million.

It's not a scientific textbook though, as it's so vague and contradictory that it can be made to say whatever you want it to say, and only after science has discovered something, fundies come out of the woodwork to say "the Bible says the same thing!!!" Well, why not say it first, for once?

I've spent most of my adult life in or around academia. While there are topical projects which spawn disserations and institutions known for specialization in certain areas, there is no such thing as a "concentrated PhD think tank". Anybody who has ever been involved in academia at a postgraduate level would know this. Knowledge and research are international. There is no monopoly on any field, anywhere.

Ok, if the Bible speaks of an expanding universe, then why are fundamentalist Christians almost unilaterally and violently opposed to the idea, stating that the universe is now as it always has been and always will be?

Hmm, strange. While *caring* for the sick belongs to the basic Christian virtues (unless one is from the born-again-no-works flavor), medical research and invasive techniques were downright obstructed by the church(es) for a very long time, especially by the Protestants. Even today research in things like stem-cells is being opposed by the pious.
If Jesus had advocated hand-washing in medical situations, or said people should boil water before they drink it, or that they should bury their own feces a few feet down rather than letting it sit out, he would have accomplished a lot more. Revolutionary improvements in health: way more useful than the Lord's Prayer.
"a couple thousand"? try 9,096 . (assuming dark skies and normal eyesight. give or take a few hundred depending on eyesight, and up to all of them depending on light pollution.)
if any serious astronomer ever claimed just "a couple thousand", they should've been set to counting. it's not like it'd be hard, only boring, and they'd've got a decent star map out of the effort.
If the Bible is so "far ahead of science" then why does it seem that people only tell us about these things AFTER they are widely known by science? In other words, was anyone saying that the Bible says there are millions of stars BEFORE millions of stars were known to exist? (and I still want to know where it says that!)
It's like with the popular interpretations of Nostradamus (which I have read quite a bit about)...it's really easy for people to say how something he wrote points to Hitler or something like that, but no one seems to have came up with that idea BEFORE Hitler came around...
