The mass graves and gulags Stalin left behind would say otherwise. That's not a comment on the inherent worth of communism as a political ideology it's cold fact. It's just as real as mad monarchs and pogroms performed with majority blessing in democracies that forget there's a difference between majority vote and mob rule.
Whatever system you've got is only as good as the people in charge of it, and the people in charge are only as honest as the people who put them there are willing to dedicate the effort into keeping them. When politics become somebody else's concern, somebody else's fault, somebody else's responsibility to fix, or worst of all: a pointless circus bereft of serious investment by a public who either just don't care or think their options are limited to living with it and hoping it gets better by itself then that is the beginning of a dark age.
