[Regarding the <a href="http://rapex.co.za/news/0509050220ci.htm ">Rapex anti-rape condom</a>, which sticks painfully into a rapist (without causing permanent damage) and can only be removed through surgery, allowing hospital staff to alert the police]
Yes, I understand the rape situation and know how fucked up it is, if a women is a victim of rape most of the time its not long term damage, its mental damage that can be dealt with power of mind. Now as for penis mutalation for a guy who's more than probably fucked up in the head, that's just wrong its taking it a step overboard because sure enough this guy will probably end up in a cold prison cell being a rape victim from 2 larger inmates. Which in turn will teach him the error of his ways. =P

First, I would like to say that this sounds like a GREAT invention! I have to admit, though, that I think it would be more effective if it did cause perminent damage. As for the rapist learning his lesson by being on the recieving end, I am feeling compassionate, so I suggest we let the rapist shove one of these up his ass for protection. After all, fair is fair.
Have you ever been raped? How do you know what kind of damage is done? Mental damage can be very serious and long-lasting.
This type of device doesn't mutilate the penis. try to keep up, Dumdum.
How do you know he will be raped in prison? He may end up *being* a rapist in prison.
I do see how this device could be misused by an evil-minded woman to cause physical pain, embarrassment and false prosecution to a male target, but I think that is likely to be extremely rare.
The damage is mostly long term. And the criminal deserves every bit of pain he suffers from the results of his crime.
Great idea, not really practical. I can't really imagine a woman going around with this item in the vagina. it would be rather bothersome.
A little response on the product.
http://www.rapex.co.za/news/050912180951.htm
A few points why the item is "wrong".
<<Women have a constitutional right to feel safe in their homes, community and country, and this device creates the perception that women are to be responsible for their own safety.>>
I believe that everyone has the obligation to ensure his own BASIC safety. You can't just blame everything on community and lack of police. This is why I am in favor of forced self defense classes for everyone. This way they can do something for their own safety.
<<This device will not protect you from being raped as the device is only activated once the penis enters the vagina.>>
True, but the site doesn't state that it does. it just helps identifying the criminal.
<<There are different kinds of rape including oral rape and anal rape. Women are also raped with a range of objects and are gang-raped. This device will not help women who are raped in these ways.>>
Once again a valid point, were it not that this is a childish one. This is like saying seatbelts are wrong because they do not protect you from debris that gets catapulted towards your head. It helps in one way. try and invent others if you are not sattified.
<<This device will make women vulnerable to violent reactions from the rapist and the potential of being violently harmed or killed is enhanced.>>
This is the only valid point. The rapist is more prone to vent his frustration on the victim if something gets lodged to his penis.
<<I am concerned that this device creates the idea that we should prepare our daughters and women to protect themselves from being raped as it is inevitable that this will happen in their lifetime and that it is OK to live in a state of constant fear.>>
Yes, women and girls should learn to defend themselves against being assaulted in general. Just like man and boys should. This will increase the chance that you won't have to spend money on doctors bills. And I don't really see how it promotes constant fear. this is like saying guns are bad because they make you live in constant fear of being killed.
Your premise seems to be that it's better for the woman to suffer lifelong psychological scars, than to have a RAPIST suffer a little pain and indignity. Are you SURE you're not drunk?
Oh, and if this guy does wind up "in a cold prison cell being a rape victim from 2 larger inmates", that's what I'd call Karma. However, the recidivism rate among rapists is one of the highest there is, so I'm not convinced it will "teach him the error of his ways."
At last! The Dentata has arrived!
Eh. The rapex anti-rape condom is completely the wrong way to go about things. Plus, who the fuck is going to wear that all the time "in case" they get raped? I know rape is a serious and terrible problem, but I don't think that this will solve it at all.
How about if the rapex dentata not only lodged itself in the rapist's penis, but also injected him with some mild sedatives? Enough to knock him out for, say, two to four hours.
The rapex was designed for the worst of the worst areas in mind, none of them in the USA if I recall. I think the inventor either came from West Africa or field tested it in West Africa. That should give you some idea about what's going on. There's a lot of ways casual usage of this device can go wrong but it was designed for areas already in crisis.
NDJI's outlook is dumb, but forgivable. He's just suffering a touch of the ol' castration anxiety and a little gross-out.
Handguns would be a good anti-rape weapon if they weren't a far better pro-rape weapon.
Off topic, but NotMe: If everybody knows self-defense, are we better off than nobody knowing self-defense? Knowing that just about every "self-defense" is equally an offense.
(Honest question, I don't have the knowledge to answer it fully, but at first glance it seems almost zero-sum).
I'm not saying this device is good, by any means, I'm just saying that when you factor in incredibly high levels of HIV infection in the parts of the world this device was designed for, a device that certainly isn't going to encourage your rapist to ejaculate has a different cost/benefit analysis to what it would have in a society where rape incidence was just as high but there was no HIV. (Yes, I know you can still get HIV if you are raped by a man who does not ejaculate. But your chance is lower).
I hope this makes some sense. The right words aren't coming to mind.
@Ens
<<If everybody knows self-defense, are we better off than nobody knowing self-defense? Knowing that just about every "self-defense" is equally an offense.>>
But it is easier to make sure everyone knows basic self defence than to make sure nobody knows basic self defence.
And it might be true that people would use it offencive, but then the victim would have a fighting/fleeing chance. If the assailant knows self defence, martial arts or carries a club of some kind, and you know nothing of the sorts, you're screwed. Literally and figuratively. It's all about the fighting chance.
I think this device has much potential for misuse either through the woman forgetting to take it out before consensual sex or just horrible pranks, but the situation is such in some parts of the world that it outweighs the negatives. How exactly he thinks people will be caught to be raped in prison is unclear.
"studies have shown that those who learn martial arts are actually less likely to perform bullying behavior."
That, by any chance, wouldn't be due to people who take martial arts classes being less likely to be fucked up in the head in the first place?
I have severe problems believing that teaching anyone to use violence effectively would make them *less* likely to use or threat violence.
See, I'm not all that fond of the name 'Rapex', it sounds kind of corny. I personlly would have called it the 'dentata', it's both appropriate, and badass.
Also, I hate this Not Drunk, Just Irish fellow.
It is more than just teaching violence. Martial arts, especially the east asian kinds, teaches a person discipline, and it helps boost their self confidence. The reason why this might (but not in all cases) reform a bullying mentality, is because the person is less likely to feel like they have to prove something, and take out anger and frustration upon someone weaker. This leads to overcome the persons fears and focus upon self improvement. People tend to become bullies as a result of an inferiority complex among other related problems.
Many martial arts teachers also teach that they are to use their skills for self defense for themselves and also those who are weaker. There are some bad seeds who misuse their skills, but they tend to be the exception rather than the rule.
"I think this device has much potential for misuse either through the woman forgetting to take it out before consensual sex or just horrible pranks"
Horrible pranks? Possibly, in which case the guy goes, gets it removed, takes pictures, and sues her, possibly pressing criminal charges, just like every other time someone plays a prank that results in damage to someone. I don't see why we can't trust women with this.
Forgetting to take it out? I donno whether you're a girl or not, so I'll just say that based on my personal experience, I find this scenario really unlikely. In any case, if it does happen, there's still always a lawsuit.
Or the guy could check first during foreplay.
Power of mind? If that's the case, why wasn't the rapist able to use said "power of mind" to keep himself from going around raping people?
I suggest this poster change his name to "Not Drunk, Just an Aspiring Rapist."
Actually Rapists go to solitary confinement, otherwise the other inmates kill them, because many of them have relatives and such outside prison and know that while they're interned they can't protect them from Rapists.
Anyway, he has a point, this is not a very good product, but he's making it in a bad way.
This device was invented originally for women in the Third World, where rape is far more common due to social/economic/religious/military/governmental corruptions and imbalances. For them, it is practical to help stop the spread of diseases like HIV. Can't see it taking off in the West, though.
Oh God, the terror of wiki all over again....
It doesn't mutilate anything. You've never heard of the other version, have you? If you stick it in, a little barbed lance strikes into the head of the penis and rips out a nicely-sized chunk when they withdraw from pain.
Personally, I say they shouldn't be able to complain if the woman has a guillotine in there. And it isn't "going overboard." Awkward as this sounds, a woman has a right to put whatever she wants in there. If some guy decides he's boing to be a dumbass....
The only real problem I can see is forgetting to take it off during consentual sex. Boy, talk about awkward....
Not that it matters. I highly doubt many women go around wearing anti-rape condoms. In fact, the thing itself was designed on the premise that a rape victim had said she "wished she had teeth down there." If anything, it's not so much a preventative measure as a security blanket.
Kinda sad, really.
@Rahab
I'd also like to add that I'd much rather just carry a pistol on my person than walk around with some anti-rape device inside me. Seems like it'd be a lot more effective (not to mention comfortable).
Oh, I’m sure. Assuming you were confident enough in using it and weren’t caught unawares, drugged or otherwise prevented from using it. Any measure taken before penetration would be better than this device. But sometimes an automated last resort can be handy.
While there are problems with the Rapex (such as the fact that, by the time it gets stuck on the guy's cock, you've already been raped), your objections hold no weight.
Firstly, the psychological effects of rape last years and sometimes decades.
Secondly, prison rape is no more a just punishment than regular rape. And rapists don't go to GenPop anyway.
Thirdly, most rapists are not "fucked up in the head". While there are a few rapists who are clinically insane, most are legally sane.
Confused?
