[So, God is a "Do as I say, not as I do" type of guy, in your view.]
If He so chooses.
God is not beholden to our rules and our ideas of what we think is right or wrong; and it's God's prerogative to eliminate a group of people (like the Midianites, or Sodom and Gomorrah) if it suits His purpose.

Maybe not, but it'd be nice if he at least followed his own rules.
Equally, it is my perogative to point out that your God is imaginary; all in your head, a fiction.
If you believe that one can excuse genocide by anyone, omnipotent deity or not, then you are truly deluded and have some seriously twisted ethics, or, put another way, lioninoil, you are an asshole.
"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully."*
And this is the god fundamentalists want to worship and emulate? This is the source of all goodness and light? This god is deserving of only score and derision and certainly not one to praise in any way.

Amos,
I think that the doublethink here goes something like this: God is defined to be Good. Thus, if God does something (like kill people), then that must have been Good. Thus, God cannot be a hypocritical evil fuck, because whatever he does must be Good.
Of course, those are just mental gymnastics to avoid admitting that God really isn't a nice person by any decent standard.
Genesis 22And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil : and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever:
Our ideas of what is right or wrong ARE his ideas of what is right or wrong...
For fundies, it all boils down to "might makes right." That's the message they get out of their religion. That's why they want the power to stomp all over anyone who gets in their way. Because if you have the power, you can do whatever you want and none of it is evil.
And fundies think this applies to everyone else, that everyone else would stomp all over them if they had the power. That's why fundies are so fucking paranoid.
Religious fundamentalism is a mental disorder. I am convinced of that.
Coffee,
I do believe you hit the nail squarely on the head,
Fundies are evil and violent bullys, just like their imaginary god,
And they assume that because they are the best and most worthy people, that everyone else has to be worse than they are,
So tell me, Loins-in-oil, if I claim to be god, wouldn't you have to have faith that I was telling the truth and do my every whim? Go sacrifice your child. I'll be waiting.
Sure it's ok, as long as it's not your people being fucked over. I'm constantly amazed by the way some Christians can condone horrible actions as approved by God, or, better yet, enacted by God, as long as there's no chance of them being affected.
Yeah, I mean, can I kill my PhD director?, I think that God is commanding me, he´s an asshole.
"God is not beholden to our roles and our ideas of what we think is right or wrong".
So God could be an utter bastard, who sleeps around, rapes his children, and beats on innocent people, and you'd still love him?
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
