Actually, the fact that by Dec 25th, you can tell that the sun is no longer slowly descending on the horizon each day was enough proof to the ancients that renewal was on its way....Its actually symbolic of beginning and not death. Get your bullshit superstitions right you fucking moron.

Actually antitox, the Winter Solstice is a yearly cosmological event. It’s simply the longest night of the year. The symbolism attached to it is about renewal, it’s about birth not death. Pretty much every holiday tradition centered on this solar event celebrates that theme. Even Christianity so get over it. If you don’t like that you shouldn’t celebrate that evil Christmas either. Or you could... you know, get over it and just have some good old fashioned winter fun and not worry so much what "evil" does.
Just thought I would mention that there is a whole other half of the world that celebrates the summer solstice on that day. Not that fundies ever think of anyone living anywhere else except the USA.

Actually, as a Pagan who observes the Solstice, it's a celebration of the days becoming longer and the rebirth of the God. Soon it will be sowing time once again. Some idiot at Crapture Ready said we celebrate the Winter Solstice because the nights are longer than the days and since we're evil we celebrate the darkness.

i'm in agreement with the winter lovers. I have a cabin on top of a mountain with 2 local stone wood burning fireplaces(one outside). I'm already getting giddy about those first flakes and the smell of a wood fire. Folks up there (N.C. mountains) think I'm looney because I love to take walks during a snowstorm.
This was the Sun at its lowest point on the horizon having lulled there for 3 days. This marked that winter was on the way out and the days get progressively longer, and was thus celebrated.

If the Winter Solstice is so evil, then how come the early Christians placed Christmas over it?
Actually, quite the opposite. The Winter Solstice is the shortest day of the year...after that, the days begin to get longer, heralding the march to Spring. If anything, it is a celebration of life yet to come.
