I would challenge anyone who doubts that some of this could happen (note I say some) to talk with Anthropologists who have spent time in Africa. Whether its blind faith (aka a mind trick) or "something else", there is significant evidence that witches and witch doctors actually do things to people - heal, curse, etc.
We ultra-rationalists in the West want to believe that there is nothing outside our understanding, but that is only faulty logic. We don't have a clue for how little we understand about the world. Who could have predicted the near collapse of our financial system a mere 18 months ago, but that is what we are living through today. Its not rational, nor do our markets behave rationally.

So what this one is saying is that witch doctors can perform miracles.
Oops, looks like jebus wasn't the son of god then but was just a witch doctor.
Anthropologist drives up to check point
Soldier : Let me see your identification.
Anthropologist : You don't need to see my identification.
Soldier : We don't need to see his identification.
Anthropologist These aren't the droids you're looking for.

Anthropologist : He can go about his business.
Soldier : You can go about your business.
Anthropologist : Move along.
Soldier : Move along... move along.
Dozens of economists around the world saw the disaster looming.
Hell, I'm not an economists but when I first heard about sub-prime mortgages, with no money down and interest only payments, I thought that it was a bad idea that would come back to haunt the banks. That was three years ago.
The facts remain that witchcraft of the type you describe is nonsense, and it's no surprise that the only people affected by curses are the superstitious and the gullible.
Who could have predicted the near collapse of our financial system a mere 18 months ago,
People in the know have predicted it since St. Ronnie was installed in the white house. His attempt to destroy California showed the neocons' capabilities.
Okay, then let the witch doctors in Africa run our economy. Could they do a worse job than Bushbaby has?
Also:
We ultra-anti-rationalists in the faith-based community want to believe that there is nothing outside our belief system, but that is only faulty logic. We don't have a clue for how little we understand about the world.
Fixed.
Actually the markets are rational, they just have too many variables to constantly monitor.
It's called chaos, and it means the market is sort of shaped like a massive number of differential equations squished together, and it would be impossible for us to get all the data needed to simulate it.
Not to mention predicting the market would cause like a time loop.
"My stock's gonna go down tomorrow, I'm selling!"
Everybody sells -> Stuff happens before it should.
Also, we've studied your witch doctors, and determined they are full of placebo and stupid, and sometimes cocaine.
It is quite rational, what happened to the economy. The administration fed monopolies taxpayer money, and allowed corporate thugs to bankrupt American industry.
There are very few members of the current Executive branch who would escape indictment in a moral and ethical world. I'm so looking forward to their punishment.
"Who could have predicted the near collapse of our financial system a mere 18 months ago"
Well actually lots of people did, including Warren Buffet.
"Who could have predicted the near collapse of our financial system a mere 18 months ago"
Actually many people saw it, including myself and Im not a financial wizard..the problem was that warning you fundies were like talking to a wall "God will not let that happen..we are fighting the holy war!" is all you would ever say when we tried to warn you.
To be honest, I see a willingness to believe all the magic stuff in this "Matt" guy- but actually, I've heard that some kinds of spells do have an effect, even if it's only psychosomatic.
Take "bone-pointing." The stress of actually believing that, as a result of the bone-pointing, you are going to die, could be incredibly harmful. Maybe even fatal.
This particular financial collapse was made inevitable by the continuing lack of regulation beginning under good ol' Ronnie Raygun and sensible people have been trying to fix it ever since. But, the Worst President Ever sealed the deal. Frankly, I'm amazed we, sort of, recovered after Katrina not to mention the disastrous effects of Chimpy's mad adventure in Iraq. So, I guess it would take some sort of moron to say that no one foretold the collapse. Rational people have been screaming warnings for decades.
Heal, yes. Curse... uh, no, because that'll rebound and bite ya in the ass. ::sigh:: Of course, even when healing, we tell the person to see a doctor. Seriously.
Uh, I predicted about 7 years ago when the curretn administration was tinkering with a healthy booming economy to gear it back to more of a "Reaganomics" style "trickle down" effect... failed by the early 90s and OH LOOK, failed again now.
Confused?
