If anything, they are the ones with the best claim on the brand. The rest of christian denominations are just offshoots. History exactly tells us that, since they are the ones with the continuous use of the brand.
The others in the last 20 massacres were mostly atheist, or democrats, or left leaning.
So, first, citation needed. Preferably to some solid intel and not some Internet Sherlock Holmes who deduced the political leanings of people from their preferred flavour of Hot Pockets.
Second, atheists, democrats, left-leaning... What's next? Cat persons, pizza-lovers? The huge majority of people is left-leaning compared to Breitbart. You can be an atheist and a right-extremist (Ernest Renan or Charles Maurras). You can be a democrat and a believer. You can lean left, not be a democrat and be a believer or any other kind of mix.
So, here, breitbart is simply trying to have the rest of us believe that there is some grand scheme against them - when in fact there are simply so many different people opposed to them, that they have to find some vague overarching category to denounce them. Liberals does the trick for them.
For Breitart, I have one label, which I think is precise enough: authoritarian. They love authority, thinking that when they impose it, they will be the ones meting out punishment. So, first, they may discover to their dismay that an authoritarian regime does not really care about your devotion: if you are a liability, you disappear, period. Second, they tout their patriotism, but the USA were built upon the idea of freedom (stemming from the Enlightenment). In effect, they are traitors to the essence of the USA. However, they are much closer to the puritan arseholes that were chased off by the Brits and who got marginalised by the proponents of Enlightenment.

So what? My mother is more left-leaning than I am on a number of subjects, and I am pretty certain I would qualify as a rabid liberal for many Americans (while I am merely centre-right, if not squarely center by European standards).

The guy in Vegas did not seem that liberal, or we would be hearing Breitbart harp about it. The guy who ran over a protester in Virginia was not a democrat or left-leaning.
