First, I do not love dictators, left-wing or right-wing. Second, if we have praised them to death, why aren't they all dead. Dearest Maggie, I consider myself a centrist-liberal type, and the only dictator I have any sort of positive emotion toward is Fidel Castro -- and that emotion is a puzzled sort of marveling that the old coot is still alive. And that's it. It's hardly "drooling" and it -certainly- isn't a ringing endorsement of him. As for Jong-Il, he's highly likely to cause massive deaths through famine and overwork, which is hardly a reason to admire him. There are more reasons to despise him than there are to like him, actually. As for the bit about "names, times, places, dates,", nothing that precise is required. Valid links to posts wherein someone states/demonstrates liberal values, followed by equally verifiable statements by the same person/poster that praise dictators would do just fine. No love until you learn the difference between "communist" and "liberal", Me

Classic liberalism (of the mid-19th century variety) does advocate free-trade and laissez-faire economics. Traditional conservatism (of the mid-19th century) supported tarrifs, protectionist policies, limiting immigration and "conserving" policies that protected landowners from greedy entrepeneurs emerging during the industrial revolution. The definitions of conservative and liberal seem to have changed following WW1, when the internationalism of the "liberals" was co-opted by conservatism. Slow process, though. The protectionism roles were totally reversed by the great depression of the 1930's. By the late 1970's, the rallying cry of the "neo-cons" became free trade and internationalism.

Depends which dictator--Castro, Chavez, I'll praise them somewhat for what success they've managed. Pol Pot, Stalin, Kim Il Young (whoever the fuck he is), I will hate them. I also hate being called a liberal, because I'm not a liberal in the slightest, not in the American nor in the European sense.

Bullshit. I'd love to see any remotely positive piece on Castro done in the US from any remotely mainstream source. And I'd love to see a positive piece on Kim Jong-il (or Kim Un Young) done from any source in the US.
