Imagine that the sun used to be quite different, as was all matter in this different past. The ions, and electrons, photons, etc.
With no radioactive decay, even, we would have to wonder if there were even the 'radiation' belts, and present arrangements, and balance as the above map shows we now have.
With a huge water ring system, partial canopy, or canopy, or whatever was here, having just come down, to drown earth.
It seems likely to me, that God could have arranged a focused high pressure blast of some form of cosmic force, that may have hit some areas of the world of water.
Perhaps, some would prefer that the fountains of the deep, helped blast a channel up to space, or some other possible aspect of the different past. I guess we really don't know. But all we really need is that different universe, and the rest is easy!
