[On Robin Williams character saying "who is evolved" in the film Night at the Museum]
Now I am not one to go on rants on things that may seem unimportant, but this really grinds my gears.
Here we have the new trend of the secular world. By working in words like 'evolution' to movie scripts wer are creating a false view of the world that is being force-fed to kids everywhere.
I think there should be a petition to take the lines "who is evolved?" out of the movie. It is not surprising that such a line was spoken by someone as liberal as Robin Williams, but still should not be said. If the views of creationism are being repressed and views of evolution are upheld- then can it really be called "freedom of speech"?
Anyhoo, that is my rant- please let me know your thoughts. I think if we band together and express our views we can make a difference.

Hey sagentx2005: Are you trying to be funny, or did two of your personalities write this?
You call for censorship, otherwise it's not 'Freedom Of Speech'? How dare you even use that phrase when you are clueless as to what it means?
Non-Contradiction award?, if you take away William´s opinion, you take it all. Clear and simple. You have right to advocate creationism, and he has his right,as an individual, and so does the script writer(because it´s FICTION)to say what they want.
"It is not surprising that such a line was spoken by someone as liberal as Robin Williams..."
sagentx I hate to break it to you but conservatives accept evolution based on the evidence as well. Next time you're in a room full of Republicans remember, nearly half of them thing creationism is a fairy tale too.
This is called Freedm of Speech. You have it, I have it, and so do the film makers. No one will remove the line because you don't like it. You and your crazy fundie friends should just avoid the damn movie.
Well, your sentiments are all well and good....except for the fact that the views of creationism are not in any way being "repressed." If creationists want creationism to be given the same scientific consideration and respect that evolution has, all they have to do is provide one, singele, solitary speck of verifiable evidence to support creationism. But they don't do this; instead they simple yell as loudly as they can that evolution is evil and must be repressed!
You can not use personal standards of axiomatic faith to establish scientific fact. If such were the case, the world would still be "flat."
Yeah, that's just awful. It's not as though they mentioned God, Jesus, Satan, Christianity, ID or creationism. No, these lefty movie writers used the "e" word.
My thoughts...
A) The movie takes place in a natural history museum, not a church. So it's inevitably going to have some science content, even if it's just superficial.
B) Fundies are always complaining that the TOE teaches bad behavior (which it doesn't), but in this context, it's actually being used to promote good behavior.
C) I have a slight problem with that line too, because technically, humans and (modern) monkeys are evolved the same amount, just in different directions.

I have a similar problem: I don't know the exact context of the quote, but it seems to support the misconception that "evolved" somehow means "superior" or "better".
Well, darn. When I saw that in the movie, I just knew I would soon see a comment complaining about it posted here. Who'd've thought it would be a troll?
It's a convincing job. The comment takes exactly the kind of "entitled," contradictory tack one would expect from a fundie, without being totally over the top. Unfortunately, this just makes the REAL fundies think that their thoughts along these lines have merit when they see them expressed by someone else -- which is why I strongly argue against trolling in the first place.

Understanding the ramifications of Freedom of Speech...
Hate Laws, Obscenity Laws, Inciting Violence Laws, Libel and Slander repercussions aside; you can express your opinion without being persecuted for it.
Also, someone else can express - wait for it... THEIR opinion.
Do we need to draw pictures?
See, now, I actually was a bit annoyed with that line. However, it was because he said "Who is more evolved?", which implies that the monkey was an earlier form. It's things like that that give people the impression that "people came from mokeys."
However, it was just a movie, and an amusing one, at that. Is it really that big of a deal that he said "evolution"? No. Get over it.
ND: In fairness, I saw a trailer for this movie as well as a short promotional "minidocumentary" in the theater just before it, and neither showed that line being used, so he couldn't have expected it beforehand if he saw only those previews. And when that line is spoken, the movie is about 10 minutes away from being finished -- it's not like it would be worth it to walk out at that point.
That said, the poster is a fool for reading such paranoid fantasies into a fantasy movie, for seeing Robin Williams as the source of the line rather than his character or the writer(s), and for having his antievolutionary standpoint in the first place.

sagentx2005, i have some advice. get a fucking life. if anyone's preventing freedom of speech it's you.
.
let me get this straight. so just because someone says 'evolve' it should be controversy. how fucking pathetic.
.
seriously, keep your fairy tales to yourself. the magic man in the sky doesn't have a say in my world or others. just because you find something silly offensive doesn't mean others who like the movie should have to deal with with your bullshit
If the views of creationism are being repressed and views of evolution are upheld- then can it really be called "freedom of speech"?
Yes. Freedom of speech means that the movie's writers can put in whatever they like, and you are equally free to make a movie (or a speech or a song or an internet post or...) saying something else. It does not mean other people can be compelled to say what *you* want them to say, or stopped from saying something with which you disagree.
'Force fed'? No one is forcing your little Junior to watch any movies.
Instead of shitting on freedom of speech as you want to do, you can feel free to make your own Creationist movies. After all, you guys are so numerous they should be extremely popular, right?
Or you can just shut the fuck up and rent a DVD of 'Left Behind Part Twelve'.
Really? You can't even say the fucking word before you get offended?
It's freedom of religion and the establishment clause. Take up your case with the supreme court, even these conservative justices will laugh you right out of the courtroom.
Creationism is not being repressed. There are lots of books, seminars and web pages devoted to promoting creationism. The problem comes about when creationists try to promote their idea as science. That's not an issue of censorship, it is an issue of creationists engaging in false advertising.
Confused?
