One tentative suggestion I've read is that we tend to become like that which we worship. Those who continue in idolatory in any form and refuse to turn ultimately to God become more and more like that which they idolise, and less and less like God, until they are no longer in any sense "in the image of God". At that point they are, quite literally, no longer human.

"At that point they are, quite literally, no longer human."
Oh, you mean like a fundie.
Also, "literally" doesn't mean what you think it does.
So, if you worship god, you become gods? Isn't that horrendously conceited and a blasphemy?
We, who don't worship anything, but respect our fellow humans, do we become more humane each day, then?
Bass-ackwards, as usual. Fundies tend to worship what they have become - mean, petty, sadistic, psychotic.
If your brand of psychotic shit is what it takes to be human, I'm willing to let you count me out.
Oh, and another Internet for messy. Truly, the definitive comment.
In the words of Richard Dawkins your god is "The most unpleasant character in all of fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sado-masochist, capriciously malevolent bully."
And you said "we tend to become like that which we worship"
I agree.
we tend to become like that which we worship
So you're a homicidal, genocidal, sociopathic, baby-killing, sex-slaving rape advocate? Good to know.

Any deity, by definition, is not human. Oh, and FOADIAF.
Buddha worship
Bast Worship
Pan worship
Isis worship
Enlil Worship
Kitsune worship
All of these, and more, are better to be worshiped than your Yahweh.

Oh, how convenient. Let me guess, the next logical step in your argument is to suggest that, since anyone you define as an 'idolater' is not human by your definition, it's all right to slaughter them, hey?

Are you fucking serious?? This type of stuff scares the shit out of me, because these are the types of rationalizations that lead to holocausts. THIS is why I have one eye on Canada, ready to escape over the border should these people ever gain enough power in the US (and don't think it's not a possibility).
BTW, isn't worshiping God idolatry in a way? God just happens to be the particular idol that you worship. And, wanting to be like God would imply that you wish to become a God yourself, which would be heretical the last time I checked. To quote Highlander, "There can only be ONE!"
"At that point they are, quite literally, no longer human."
And with those words, a new age of wars, torture and genocide began...
Book of future wars
Pinguin books
If they're not longer human, they can't sin or commit idolatry, have you thought about that?. By the way, were there any humans before 5000 BC?
"we tend to become like that which we worship."
Man that is BS, I've never seen one worshiper of Christ forgive an enemy besides Ned Flanders.
Also very few Christ worshipers I've seen donate all their possessions beyond what is essential to live to charity. Though I've seen a few reports of naturalists, environmentalists and Pagans doing it.
And I've noticed few Christ worshipers end up nailed to planks of wood.
At that point they are, quite literally, no longer human.
It makes it so much easier to demonize them at that point, doesn't it?
"...we tend to become like that which we worship."
You're not helping your God's case here. Who'd want to worship him if he's like you?
Also, wouldn't this mean becoming an atheist would make you poof out of existence? What are we all doing here, then?
PS: Look up what "tentative" means.
Confused?
