[Re: "An Inconvenient Truth"]
THIS MOVIE IS AN INSULT TO THE FAMILIES OF 9/11 VICTIMS
It is unpatriotic to criticise the government in times of war. Instead of whining and scaring everybody, Gore should back the president 100%, It sickens me that Gore doesn't even care to mention 9/11 in the film, as if it didn't even happen.

Our country was FOUNDED on dissent and criticism of the government, even during times of war.
Patriotism has nothing to do with saluting a flag, but upholding the ideals of the people that founded the country.
And even then, sometimes it is morally more right to be unpatriotic and to damn the ideals that founded where you live than it is to remain patriotic to vile ideas.
Is it just me, or did "An Inconvenient Truth" have nothing to do with 9/11?
To me, it seems like the people who insist that the president and government be immune to criticism in times of war, and insist on dragging 9/11 into everything, are doing far more to insult the families than people making unrelated movies without mentioning 9/11.
The only mention to 9/11 in the movie is that if climate change continues to happen as the scientists have [so far correctly] predicted, the World Trade Center Memorial site will be under water.
Don't you think we should worry about threats, not just from terrorism?
So wait, the entire premise of this is wrong. Gore did mention it. Dumb. Ass.
Seconding Incubusion's statements. When "patriotism" becomes synonimous with "not arguing with the government," we'll have officially failed everything this country was founded on.
Got a quote from a very bright guy who's commonly known as Mark Twain: "Loyalty to my country always; loyalty to my government when it deserves it."
"I love America more than any other country in this world, and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually. " -James Baldwin
"Patriotism means to stand by the country. It does not mean to stand by the President or any other public official... " -Theodore Roosevelt
""My country, right or wrong" is a thing no patriot would ever think of saying except in a desperate case. It is like saying "My mother, drunk or sober. " G. K. Chesterton:
"Patriotism is your conviction that this country is superior to all others because you were born in it. " George Bernard Shaw:
"The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair. H. L. Mencken:
"In the United States, doing good has come to be, like patriotism, a favorite device of persons with something to sell. H. L. Mencken:
"Men in authority will always think that criticism of their policies is dangerous. They will always equate their policies with patriotism, and find criticism subversive. " Henry Steele Commager:
"During times of war, hatred becomes quite respectable, even though it has to masquerade often under the guise of patriotism. " Howard Thurman:
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public. (1918) Theodore Roosevelt:
Bullshit, you stupid fuck. If no one criticises, either:
a) we've finally managed to reach perfect harmony amongst the entire population (not bloody fucking likely!).
b) we've failed as a nation, and are now using a combination of brainwashing and fear to control the populace so that they will not criticize and will not dissent.
Without reasoned discourse, debate, and yes, dissent , no democracy can truly be so.
Ed: great quote indeed. I would break out with V for Vendetta, but it isn't quite applicable here (yet).
Julian: I am in awe of your quote mining capability. I wish I could come up with something truly applicable here, but my mind blanks. My hat's off to you.
THE LORD OF THE RINGS TRILOGY IS AN INSULT TO THE FAMILIES OF 9/11 VICTIMS.
It sickens me that Jackson doesn't even care to mention 9/11 in the films, as if it didn't even happen. Clearly his reference to the Two Towers was to the WTC, yet he failed to mention how they were brought down by the Islamofacists!!!
In times of war, the governement is 100% always right and citizens should always support it's every decision! ALL HAIL SAURON!
I was going to enter a quote myself, from Mr. Orwell; "George Orwell:
In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth becomes a revolutionary act."
but what is up with 'baloney muncher'? It really gives quite a visual.
"An Inconveient Truth", from my very limited knowlege of seeing the trailer, is a movie about ecology.
So, my question is - WTF?!
@ssdexecutor
Allegiance to the State is paramount!
Any deviation from said behavior is deviant!
All who oppose Premier Bush are to be considered traitors and shot on sight!
Button that shirt!
Comrade Ssdexecutor is truly a Person of the State! Continue the work, Comrade. The State is all!
I was going to make a snarky comment about 9-11 not being mentioned in the wholly babble, either. But then I realized that, given the opportunity, the fundies could find it in their magic book, somewhere. A person who is fanatic enough and sufficiently blind by "faith" can pull anything out of his ass ... uh, I mean Holy Scripture ... oh, wait, right the first time.
<<< It is unpatriotic to criticise the government in times of war. >>>
The highest degree of patriotism is not in unthinking obedience, but in working to improve the country you love. If you don't like that, you're welcome to go find a dictatorship where criticism is met with the noose.
<<< It sickens me that Gore doesn't even care to mention 9/11 in the film, as if it didn't even happen. >>>
I fail to see what 9/11 has to do with the topic of global climate and our effects on it.
baloney_muncher may be just a troll, but I have heard this sentiment (or very similar ones) from many people, and it never fails to make me ill. Nor does it ever fail to push me that little bit closer to being a misanthrope.
Treating this seriously, 9/11 has become the ultimate Argument Ender for the Republican Party, much as "Because I said so," is the ultimate weapon of a parent.
Anytime a message that is contrary to the Republican Agenda arises, all a right-winger has to do is yell some varriation of 9/11. "You don't care about 9/11!" or "What, you want another 9/11?" or "Do you sympathize with the people who did 9/11?" or even the ever-popular "9/11 changed [fill in the blank with whatever]."
I've seen varriations of the "9/11!!" yell used to shut down everything from criticizing the president to complaining about gas prices to justifying tax cuts to invading other nations to banning gay marriage and anything else they care to link it to. Bush himself nearly always mentions 9/11 in speeches (I can't remember the last speech I listened to from him that didn't mention 9/11, and I listen to them all. Hell, there's even a drinking game you can play about how fast and how often he mentions it in a speech...).
Hell, even the White House now admits that Saddam had nothing to do with 9/11, but that didn't stop them from deliberately and systematically connecting him with it.
9/11 has been used by this administration to justify every point on it's agenda.
Isn't it interesting to note that when someone opposed to Bush mentions it...you get Ann Coulter condemning them as being gleeful 9/11 widows enjoying the deaths of their husbands.
Yeah, and you know, the other day, I was watching the Hulk movie, and it didn't mention 9/11 ONCE! What a blatant display of God-hating, flag-burning treason!
Oh, wait...
As for the rest- dissent is the highest form of patriotism, bitch. Patriotism is loving your country enough to want to change it and do what's best for it, not shutting up as some chimp with a superiority complex and his finger on the button flushes this country down the toilet.
Which shows more love for your country- exploiting a tragedy to shut up opponents, or working to uphold its laws, the Constitution and to make this country better?

I'm sorry, what?
"It sickens me that Gore doesn't even care to mention 9/11 in the film, as if it didn't even happen."
Maybe because 9/11 had absolutely NOTHING to do with the movie?
I think he's confusing "Fahrenheit 911" with "An Inconvenient Truth".
Regardless, this fool is still hopelessly inane.
Confused?
