He was aboard the HMS Beagle, but he smoked hash, a drug abuser, and was a womanizer, when he paid for it. He made his 'half wit' conjectures under the influence of alcohol, and sea sickness.

I don't know about you, but that is not my kind of hero! :)

@Bert Darwin actually was not the first to come up with the idea. Evolution was actually a pretty accepted idea, even by many creationists of the day ( I recall reading somewhere that Darwin himself was fairly devout as theists go but I don't remember where so don't quote me on that). Darwin based his work on the likes of Lemark, but due to his travels came to different conclusions on just how evolution worked.

He is called the Father of Evolution because it is his works which more modern ones are based off of, and thus he is the one fundies like to shithammer. They totally ignore the fact that evolution had been pretty much an accepted fact for decades by that time. (read: Dinosaur bones)

Mozart was an atheist womaniser who drank and consumed drugs. He is still the father of mordern piano music. Ironic since one of his functions was ship vicar... Indeed that was what he was going to become.

Sea sickness is a mental disorder that affects some people because their mind is incapable of relating motion of the ocean to the relative stability of the ship.

Darwin was never in an insane asylum. His theories brought great controversy and he took a lot of flak. But he won. He won good and hard. The scientists of his day began to update his theory.

Remember the only argument against darwinian theory was that it would take too long. Lord Kelvin's argument held water in lieu of physics of the day. Darwin's own son provided the necessary proof disproving Lord Kelvin's argument.

1. Smoking hash in the 1850's would be no more shocking than a 3 martini lunch in the 50's. So even if you could prove it, I wouldn't be surprised.

2. He was a womanizer on a ship full of men? Amazing

3. Alcohol? What the daily ration of rum?

4. Seasickness? have you been on a sea going vessel? Many people get seasick, in fact it would be a reason he'd be prescribed the hash.

5. If his theories were rejected they wouldn't be accepted today. I don't believe that he was ever in an insane asylum.

Anyway, even if everything you said was true, it wouldn't matter. We don't worship Darwin. In fact the theory of evolution has gone so far past Darwin, that I doubt it would even matter if he never existed. Somebody else would of done similar work to his and we would still know what we know today.
