Atheists are not capable of being patriots because they are incapable of convictions or love. Since they have denied God, they see no reason to practice either since they don’t see how it will benefit their personal standing.
So no, atheists can not be Americanism.

Fundies are not capable of being patriots because they are incapable of convictions or love. Since they look to their faith as a "get out of hell free" card, they see no reason to practice either since their theology says that it won't benefit their personal standing.
So no, fundies can not be Americanism [sic ].
There. Fixed it for you.
Or even,
Fundies are not capable of being patriots as they believe in a higher authority than the state and will obey the perceived will of that authority even if it is against the laws or wishes of the state. Hence they seek to undermine the freedoms the state believes are due its people, the education the state believes its people require, even the laws that the state has put in place to protect the lives of its people.
So no, fundies can not be American.
first of all... grammar lesson: a person cannot be "Americanism" they can stand for it, but they cannot BE it
second, who are you to tell us that atheists cannot love? it is a HUMAN emotion, not a divine one
Bullshit.
Atheists are perfectly capable of being patriots, we're just not as likely to follow authority blindly and unquestioningly, like a fundie would.
It takes more than the word of a so-called born-again president for us to go to war. It takes evidence, something your president and his administration lied about.
So if you're pissed off because atheists are less likely to support this so called war on terrorism, maybe you should ask yourself why someone who follows the teachings of Jesus Christ would be in favor of going to war at all.
As for love, I love my children enough not to want to sacrifice their lives for oil and corporations.
Fuck you.
That's OK, I never wanted to be an Americanism anyway. They're mainly vulgar expressions or slang spoken in English by Americans but not other speakers of English. Some Britishisms, on the other hand, are actually quite witty.
Morality does not necessitate God.
And as people like you have shown time and time again, God does not necessitate morality, either.
"...they see no reason to practice either..."
I don;t know about everyone else here, but I don't decide whether or not to love or feel strongly about soemthing, it just happens (or doesnt happen). Being atheist apparently enables you to switch of emotions at will - I must be "doing" atheism wrong or something.
No.
I am a patriot. I think the current American administration is an abomination, but I love my country.
You may also be surprised to learn that, even though I am a hard-line atheist, I DO love my family, my friends, my pets, music, theater, nature and my work. I do NOT love idiots telling me what I am or am not capable of nor what I do or do not love.
My love has nothing to do with benefit to my personal standing, no true love does.
P.S. No one can be an "ism."
ignoring everything else in the post b/c you all handled that so well, but even if the first sentence were true, it wouldn't make the last one true. Who says you have to be a patriot to be an American.
I'm just an ignorant Limey, but I'm pretty sure most of your principal founding fathers were Deists and even included (gasp) the odd Athiest.
Go read Tom Paine or Ben Franklin please.
Great men, probably rotating in graves at several thousand RPM at present.
Atheists are ... incapable of convictions or love.
Because one's personal beliefs dictate their entire personality. Everyone of a certain belief structure is affected the exact same way.
Since they have denied God, they see no reason to practice either since they don’t see how it will benefit their personal standing.
Not believing in God causes people to become selfish and short-sighted, apparently.
So no, atheists can not be Americanism.
What about followers of other religions? Can they be 'Americanisms' or is that exclusive to Christians because 'tahts wat r cuntry was fownded on lol!!'?
Fair people of the board, this is fundamentalism in a nutshell.
They do things not because they think its the right thing to do, but to get God points. There whole life is devoted to self-interest. This quote proves it beyond doubt.
"Go read Tom Paine or Ben Franklin please.
Great men, probably rotating in graves at several thousand RPM at present."
So lets dig them up and wrap them in copper wire. We'll have a near limitless supply of free power!
Afterall Einstein claimed that human stupidity is infinite, reading fstdt I tend to agree.
"Atheists are not capable of being patriots because they are incapable of convictions or love. Since they have denied God, they see no reason to practice either since they don’t see how it will benefit their personal standing."
Wait a minute - you mean I'm not supposed to be obeying the law, paying my taxes, singing the National Anthem, flying the flag, or enjoying my family?
Is there some handbook on how to be an atheist that I didn't get?
Times like this, I'm glad I'm Australian. We have nutcases too, but thanks to an apathetic national character, ours are lazier and couldn't be bothered arguing too much.
The few that can be bothered, go to America. We gave you Ken Ham who built your creationist museum. Sorry 'bout that.
Wouldn't have happened here. Too lazy, and we'd mostly just laugh instead of building.
No offence to the intelligent Americans or Christians, but your fundamentalist christians are scaring the crap outta the rest of the world.
Somebody tell them to calm down and just take it easy. I'm sure Jesus would be cool with that.
To be honest, if atheism (or in my case agnosticism) renders one incapable of being a blind, narrow-minded, flag-waving, anthem-singing, xenophobic lemming, then it's a bonus.
"Atheists are not capable of being patriots because they are incapable of convictions or love"
Yet further evidence that fundies don't actually have a clue what love is and are therefore missing the entire point of their own religion. As for convictions - you couldn't be more wrong, Mr Alien. I sincerely believe that your perverted theology is vicious, petty, ignorant, spiteful,life-denying, psychologically damaging and ultimately soul destroying. is that convinction strong enough for you?
I'm an atheist.
I guess I can't be a patriot.
Now I feel so stupid having spent 14 years and-counting in the Navy, going on five overseas deployments (hostile areas in all), when I wasn't allowed to do that because I'm not a Fundy.
And I'm sorry, I really did not know I wasn't allowed to fall in love and have two beautiful children with a wonderful wife. Do I have to tell them to leave?
And do I have to now start hating America? I mean, I really do love it and believe in it, despite a few minor quibbles. I don't want to take down my Flag...somehow, I feel I've earned one.
No, I guess I'll just tell AS to fuck himself with a meathook, and to thank his invisible sky daddy he probably won't ever have the balls to state this crap to my face, or those of a huge number of my buddies.
@ Long Cut
I spent 20 years in the Navy, and no one ever mentioned a religious requirement. I hope this means they won't take away my pension.
Hmmm. Re-read the oath of enlistment...
"I (name) do solomnly affirm that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies both foriegn and domestic, that I will bear true faith and aligance to the same, and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and those he appoints over me in accordance with Naval Regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice"
Hmmm. Nothing in there about needing to acknowledge God or anything.
Thomas Paine, one of our greatest patriots was an atheist! You lose dumbfuck(and I'll bet you are one of those "sunshine patriots" that he spoke of, if you don't know what that means, read some fucking American history before you make more idiotic statements about America, dolt)!
So, fundies only "practice" convictions and love, because they think it will benefit their personal standing?
Well said. Of course it isn't really true, but it might make them think, which is something they don't want to do.
He's a troll, right?
I'm so glad, if this is any representation of what "Americanism"s think then I'll quite happily stay Australian.
You know Australia where we successfully (mostly) practice multiculturalism and accept all peoples? Pretty cool place.
"atheists can not be Americanism."
Why no, a tangible person cannot be an intangible concept indeed! Well played!
Seriously, I don't know why patriotism and religion are always lumped together. America wasn't known in the time of all those Biblical shenanigans. I don't see a point to patriotism. It's like dividing humanity up against itself in teams based on a factor no one had any say in: where you were born. Sure, I'm appreciative of the opportunities we have, but that's no reason to assume that America is the greatest nation on the face of the earth, no question. It's not. Get off your high horse. There are plenty of things wrong with this country that other countries have solved years and years ago. We have a long way to go yet. And even with a liberal in office, I don't think we'll be getting there any time soon. There's too much ridiculous gridlock and too many stupid, corrupt people.
“Atheists are not capable of being patriots because they are incapable of convictions or love.”
I’m of the conviction you’re a complete idiot, how’s that?
I am also a vet of 20 years, 3 months, 3 days in the US Navy, giving up a least one of each national and family holiday to be deployed int he nation’s defense. How long were you in uniform?
I’ve also worked in the FBM program for 44 years, both enlisted and civilian.
And I’ve been completely faithful while dating, engaged, and married to my wife for 39 years.
You’re just lying for Jesus.
"Since they have denied God, they see no reason to practice either since they don’t see how it will benefit their personal standing.”
Complete bullshit. Protecting the nation’s a no-brainer, that’s where all my stuff is.
Fidelity’s easy, i made a promise.
Love is even easier.
Can’t see how belief in a skyfairy would change any o it.
“So no, atheists can not be Americanism.”
Gotta ask again, how many years in uniform? How much time deployed? Ever been absolutely sure you were going to die?
Ever kept an oath while no one was looking?
I’ll lay my patriotism next to yours any fucking day, hoser.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
