"The problem as I see it is that I'm completely ignorant of science where this is concerned (as are lots of other people) - so hearing a young earth vs. old earth argument doesn't do much good when I have no knowledge of science to base anything on."

'So close, so close...!'
Moral: Something that even the finest scientific minds wouldn't hesitate to say, when confronted by the unknown; and as Dr Karl Kruszelnicki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Karl_Kruszelnicki
http://www.drkarl.com/home/
is wont to say (emphasis added): 'Saying "I don't know" is the beginning of wisdom.
Just because you don't know about something, doesn't necessarily make you ignorant. It's when you willingly go out of yourway to avoid knowing about such, especially to protect an unjustifiable delusion you've allowed to infect yourself with, psychologically.
PROTIP: When Darwin's "On the Origin of Species" was first published, it sold more than the Bible. Then - as now - the Church of England openly embraced this new paradigm-shifting, nay, potentially beliefs-destroying thinking (theory then, proven fact today). Why? Because then - as they do nowadays - the C-of-E openly admit that much of the Bible is purely fable and metaphor; as in not to be taken literally.
I guess that's why the phrase 'Ignorance is Bliss' exists. Facts - to some people - can do far more than just 'make the braimeats all hurty'.
