Well I believe in a god, but lets say your friend was right, or Atheist are right, and religion is only something to comfort us when we die. That must make Atheist, real assholes, alot of atheists like to convert believers and diss religion ect.. so that just means they don't want you to feel good about dieing they want you to suffer, so if your friend is right then that must make atheists fucking pricks.

Religion dictates to all non believers all sorts of eternal suffering. Read whatever holy manuscript it is that you subscribe to about whatever sky daddy you believe in and tell me who's the fucking prick.
Keep your ideals to yourself and believe whatever you want.
Ah, but religion ISN'T just something to comfort you when you're dying. It's also a tool to oppress the heathens and apostates, and anyone you want to oppress. So, I guess that makes us asshole atheists freedom fighters.
To be completely honest, simply ceasing to exist is more appealing to me then sitting around for eternity. Does that not sound maddeningly boring to anyone else?
"Woo, so it's been 8,000 years of this. How much longer we got? Forever? Rats."
libkittens, there is a solution to the monotony of eternity:
Beer Volcanoes.
Yep, I said it: Beer Volcanoes.
...now to just find a religion that actually believes in them...
Now in regards to the post:
I've never found an athiest who tried to convert me. I have, on the other hand, had religious people try to convert me before condemning me to hell.
Who's the "prick" again?
Now I would also suggest not feeling good about death. Personally I fear it and I want to leave a legacy of my own. All the fear of death does is make a person more productive and, once you've made your legacy, you can feel rather comfortable knowing that your only mortal and your finite time is ending. Why? Because you will have lead a good life and that, ultimately, is all we can truly aspire for.
Well that's my semi-rambling two cents.
Argh! And the whole making you suffer thing was going SO well! But you figured us out...now we will have to do something else with our time previous spent trying to make you suffer.
I like the beer volcano idea Stürmen, but have you learned nothing from L Ron; if you can find the religion you want, start your own!
I'm fine with death. When I was little the thought of it freaked me out and my mother calmed me by telling me it's okay because I would simply go to Heaven (I was on the verge of tears at the time). When I stopped believing it was a bit of a process to come to terms with reality as I was not given the proper tools to accept death and had to come up with them on my own. However, once I did my life became a lot better.
In this day and age we should look to intellectual knowledge to deal with our issues instead of just putting a bandaid over them with silly delusions that helped our primitive ancestors. I don't know how other people deal with death while holding on to religion, but as a child it always bothered me to some extent. I was constantly thinking about it, Heaven, god, etc., as I now believe that I always knew it didn't make sense and the delusion that was fed to me was like a teddy bear that a child grabs hold of when they are afraid. Sure, it comforts them to squeeze it as they walk down that long dark, hallway to find the light, but their fear is not gone. Take away the source of their fear and they'll be a lot better off.
Btw, very few atheists try to convert anybody. I feel that most (in this society anyway) simply want you to educate yourself and decide on your own. Personally, if you want to be Christian I think that's perfectly fine. I just have a problem with people who are Christian because it's all they've know their whole life (I don't bother them about it though, thus I'm not posting my reply in a place I expect you to see this). You have the right to make an unbiased and informed decision about what you believe in and unfortunately society and your parents robbed you of that right by brainwashing you as they were brainwashed. And without the proper tools to deal with reality you feel as though you have no choice but to cling on to religion in order to function without suffering. It's quite sad actually.
Fundies, real assholes, alot of fundies like to control believers and diss free thought etc... so that just means they don't want you to feel good about life tey want you to suffer, so that makes fundies fucking pricks.
There, fixed.
It's not just about the 'feel good' factor.
Which kinda begs the question, since when does fundieism makes people feel good?
Word, Zadic , word.
"asshole atheist freedom fighters"...that has a splendid ring to it.
To the Narutard of the day:
It seems you made a personal cult of your own death. Not my problem.
No, atheists and other people who are spiritually free, have a more balanced approach to life and death.
the goal is to teach people not to need the false comfort of religion and to find comfort elsewhere.
Imagine if you saw somebody carrying around a crutch even though they were perfectly capable of walking without one. That's what it's like.
@anti-nonsense:
My thoughts precisely.
Since when do atheists try to convert people? That's right, never.
Also, Superrazien, when you call other 'fucking pricks' or 'real assholes', you're the pot and anyone else is the kettle.
Heh, good to hear David, and yes, I could.
I bet I could even get Tom Cruise to join it! If he'll buy the BS spewed by the followers of a fiction writer, he'll believe the [cue deep foreboding voice] "Prophet of Inebriation!"
Of course that would also require getting listed as a "Corporate scheme that preys upon the weak willed" by Germany.
I'll leave the "every other religion" jokes to you though.
...now to just come up with a good name...
Religion is not just "what the hell happens after death". Actually, some religions such as the Greek or the Sumerian one were pretty pesimistic and didn't give a danm(they believed in an afterlife, but looked like a bad taste sweatsoap basement). The closest we have to the Christian concept of afterlife were the Egyptians but, well, they were the exception, rather than the rule. Religion, actually, works as science or philosophy, they try to give sense to many of questions that arise in our existence. Another different topic is whether they're valid or not.
Ok, so if my friend's wife dies, and he chooses to believe she's "on vacation," is it cruel for me to, you know, not foster his delusion?
"alot of atheists like to convert believers"
How many people have you tried to "convert"?
Honestly, shut the fuck up.
"The phantoms of their brains have got out of their hands. They, the creators, have bowed down before their creations. Let us liberate them from the chimeras, the ideas, dogmas, imaginary beings under the yoke of which they have been pining away." Karl Marx
“Well I believe in a god, but lets say your friend was right, or Atheist are right, and religion is only something to comfort us when we die.”
Would that it were limited to the deathbed.
But you guys keep legislating it so that _I_ have to observe YOUR superstition.
“That must make Atheist, real assholes, alot of atheists like to convert believers”
It’s self-defense, to keep you from voting in laws like no alcohol sales on your sabbath.
"and diss religion ect..”
Figure out why you’re dissing atheism, here, you might understand why we diss the religious.
"so that just means they don't want you to feel good about dieing they want you to suffer, so if your friend is right then that must make atheists fucking pricks.”
Again, don’t care what you fantasize about on your deathbed, stop bringing it to court, as laws, and policy.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
