Yeah, churches help all right. They "helped" spread the faith with thumbscrews, witch hunts, murder, a modicum of rape, and a few wars in the Dark Ages. They "helped" by running residential schools to beat and rape the Native children out of their supposedly savage ways. They "helped" several orphans to get adopted into families that raped them daily. They "helped" a few other kids with counselling sessions where they were raped, told to commit suicide, or beaten so severely that their mangled corpse could be mistaken for someone that got in between two street gangs. Oh and they help priests regularly escape formal punishment for molestation.

So telling gay people that they are destined to go to Hell because God hates them is helping people while accepting gay people as they are and treating them like human beings is harming them.

To paraphrase Louis Black, I remember when all the churches in our city had to lock their parishioners inside, for fear that roving bands of homosexuals would break in and start fucking each other in the ass on the altar. Then, of course, they would turn on the congregation.
In my experience Churches are less than helpful. The best you can say about them is that there's generally a strong community within which helps each other in times of difficulty, but the same can be said about my Tuesday gaming group. The church itself though? Not so much.
I have met many homosexuals and bisexuals in my time. Some are nice people. Some are assholes. Some are a bit of both. There's no particular trend that I've noticed that suggests that they tend towards one extreme or the other any more than straight people. There are also smart gay people, dumb gay people, idiot savant gay people, and completely average gay people. None of the ones I've met have been pedophiles, but that's provably not a universal fact. I don't know any straight pedophiles either, and again that's provably not a universal part of being straight.
