I was reading that dogs evolved from wolves around 12,000 years ago, what I want to know is how a purebred wolf evolves into a Chihuahua, for one that doesn't seem like a long enough time, and two, how did the gene structure just change? I mean the wolf would have to have mated with something else. Oh wait that doesn't work.

It's not surprising that fundies can't accept that we evolved from a common ancestor with apes, but they don't even believe that dogs descended from wolves? I mean, it doesn't take that much of a stretch of the imagination to see that dogs and wolves share a very close common ancestor. Fuck, they're even the same goddamn species for god's sake.
Swing and a miss. For your education:
Based on DNA evidence, the wolf ancestors of modern dogs diverged from other wolves about 100,000 years ago,and dogs were domesticated from those wolf ancestors about 15,000 years ago. This date would make dogs the first species to be domesticated by humans.
Evidence suggests that dogs were first domesticated in East Asia, possibly China, and some of the peoples who entered North America took dogs with them from Asia.
As humans migrated around the planet, a variety of dog forms migrated with them. The agricultural revolution and subsequent urban revolution led to an increase in the dog population and a demand for specialization. These circumstances would provide the opportunity for selective breeding to create specialized working dogs and pets.
As for how Chihuahuas were bred, as all animals are domesticated, certain ones are bred for certain traits, over decades until the traits breed true. That is how.
My father doesn't think dogs came from wolves either. One night last year I was watching Leno or Conan, one of those shows and they had an animal expert as one of the guests and he mentioned how all dogs came from wolves and my dad goes "no, he's wrong. That's not true." So I say "how do you know?" and then he practically yells at me "Go look in the good book?" I'm not exactly sure what that meant. Is there a verse in the bible I missed that says "wolves shall not evolve into dogs"? It's amazing how he, who never graduated high school, thinks he knows better than a zoologist.
Then there is the arguement that early humans copied the hunting patterns of wild canines and they, the noble canines, figured there was easy food and, thus, domesticated humans.
Most dog breeds were created via 'artificial' evolution. In other words, humans intentionally bred dogs together with certain traits (cuteness, hunting ability, aggression, size, etc) and this sped up the changes and splits because humans removed the random factor from the equation.
Google "Russian Silver Fox" for a nice example of how you can artificially select very different traits in only a relatively small number of generations. Very interesting story ... obviously Badfish hasn't seen it.
"The Tame Silver Fox is the result of nearly 50 years of experiments in the Soviet Union and Russia to domesticate the silver morph of the Red Fox. Notably, the foxes not only become more tame, but more dog-like as well: the new foxes lost their distinctive musky "fox smell", became more friendly with humans, put their ears down (like dogs), wagged their tails when happy and began to vocalize and bark like domesticated dogs." - Wikipedia
I mean the wolf would have to have mated with something else. Oh wait that doesn't work.
It hasn't produced any offspring that I know of, but there are some farm boys up around Idaho and Montana that have been trying it with sheep.

Someone doesn't understand genetics.

Or selective breeding.
Chihuahuas were bred to be a food source. In a warm environment meat spoils quickly, so their size is similar to a KFC bucket, sufficient for a visit by an important guest. They are also practically hairless. This may be adaption to warm climates, but I think it just makes them easy to peel. They are always shivering when around people. They're not cold, they're just bug-eyed and shivering because they know what they were bred for.
Badfish, you know that 'intelligent design' some of your fellow fundies love to promote? Well, sometimes it takes place for real, we nasty evolutionists will admit to that.
Cuz we done it!
Uuummm, anybody checking the thread will find that this was posted over 5 years ago!
Is FSTDT into thread Necromancy?

It only took about 200 years to get a teacup poodle from a standard poodle.
100 years ago, dachshunds weighed 40-50 pounds, they used to battle badgers for a living.
Soviet fox breeders tried to breed for friendlier foxes for fur farms. Within 5 generations they started getting a different animal. Floppy ears and white spots seemed to come along with the friendlier foxes.
It doesn't take as long as you think it does for these breeds to change.
