its called the effects of sin in our lives. It screwed up our perfect DNA and everything, now we have stupid birth defects
[Why are infants punished for the sins of others?]
look, I'm not God so I dont know why He punishes the way He does or how He lets it happen, but I do know that He says He punishes to the third and fourth generation of those who hate Him. So consider it unfair if you want to but I trust my God to be faithful and just.

Didn't Jesus say something like "No son shall be punished for the sins of the father"?
And What if you are perfect, live in a monastary, pray 7 times a day, bible study for 4 hours a day and live your life for god in every possible way as ordered by the bible. But an a-bomb explodes just outside of blast range from the monastary. The monastary is destroyed. You go out into the world while keepin up all commandments and rules set by the bible and get married with an equally religious woman. Have a child and it is horribly disfigured by the effects of the a-bomb. Is this also the work of god?
Let me pose a hypothetical.
You're a child. One day you father walks into your room and announces that you're grounded for the next two months. You're obviously being punished for something, but he won't tell you why.
Would you consider this reasonable? No? Then why would you accept this kind of behaviour from an all-knowing, all-powerful diety?
Again, 'God's' actions as described sound more like the behaviour of a spoiled child, rather than an enlightened supreme being.
Fair punishment for an offence is not a concept familiar to this Biblical God.
Punishing the innocents hardly seems to be the actions of a "perfect, loving God(TM)".
If people behaved that way with their pets you would have them up on charges of cruelty to animals.
It's a sad day when we seem to have greater morals than our deity.
Well, the Bible also says that children won't suffer for the sins of their parents. I guess it just depends on what passages one wants to believe. Of course, the Bible also says that God is good and loving and, in fact, is love itself, so if God gives you some horrible defect to punish your parents, it's because he loves you... or something like that.
@The Last Conformist
I stopped expecting anything from the bible 2 hours after I found this site. I was pretty much agnostic at the time while still being "encouraged" to go to bible study (once a week for about an hour in church) by my parents, but now I can't really be bothered with anything written in the bible, said by religious folks or anything related to religion. Except for the great stories som "holy" books contain. I really prefered the Mahabharata and the Ramayana over the bible.
Mandrake -- Not to quibble, but it's unto the TENTH generation.
Deut. 23:2 KJV "A bastard shall not enter into the congregation of the LORD; even to his tenth generation shall he not enter into the congregation of the LORD."
However, your point is well taken.
Confused?
