(On whether or not it is a sin to perform an abortion to save a mothers life)
One thing we need to keep in mind is that doctors are not gods. There have been cases of doctors telling a woman "one more pregnancy will kill you", the woman ignoring the admonition, and going on to deliver a baby and live. Only God knows the hour and moment a person will die. Not only do miracles occur, but also fallible men make mistakes.
I remember a thread in which a woman vehemently defended her mother (to the point of calling her a saint) who had aborted the poster's older brother or sister because a doctor said she would certainly die if she didn't. Her mother may or may not be a saint now due to repentance, but the effects of her error have had lasting effects on those around her; for one, her daughter's conscience is not properly formed due in part to this action.
This isn't a matter of putting the life of a baby over that of his mother. This is a matter of putting our faith in the medical machine rather than in God. And only God can save your immortal soul, which is ultimately what matters.

But what about cases of doctors telling a woman "one more pregnancy will kill you", and being correct ?

True. It's about making the existence of an embryo more important than the life of a woman.

I think I'll go with the "medical machine" rather than your douchy "God" who would want women to die in childbirth.
...Also, if the woman dies the baby will often die with her. That makes the whole being fruitful and multiplying thing kind of pointless, wouldn't you say?

Bullshit. I've seen mothers who terminated due to ectopic pregnancies (which never result in a live birth, by the way) or other physical issues condemned as selfish whores by you people. Go onto FaceBook or Yahoo and read the comments. Read christian blogs. The message is clear. The fetus is more important than the mother every fucking time.
That is, until it's born and needs food and medical care. You did your job by talking someone out of having an abortion. The actual baby is someone else's problem.
That's right, Doctors are not gods, but generally, in matters pertaining to humanity's well-being, they exceed greatly the sexual perverts and fearmongers of various religions and religious cults who are know-nothing dolts for the most part.
Tell you what, ExGratia, if I see you choking, I will put my faith in your god rather than perform the Heimlich Maneuver. Is that what you would prefer? Or would you hypocritically want me to forego the prayers and actually help you?

Medicine produces results. Once you can prove your god can cure an illness or save a woman in the case of an ectopic pregnancy, we will discuss.

That's the line of thought that leads to children dying of easily treatable illnesses because their parents chose to pray over them instead of taking them to the doctor.

So should you develop a tooth abscess, I trust we'll hear no more about 'Health Insurance', nor 'Dentists' etc, amirite?! A prayer a day should keep the doctor away.
A cavity is excruciating enough. Can you say 'Hugo Boss', ExGrating? I know you can. [/That scene in "Marathon Man"] Remember: No 'faith in medical science ' allowed.
In watching the more than infinite agony you'd suffer, I'd almost understand what the Cenobites (in the "Hellraiser" films") were about: 'Explorers in the further regions of experience', and all that jazz. [/Schadenfreude ]

Until you can provide evidence of the existence of either a god or a soul, this is utter bollocks.

Confirmation bias 101: For every one of these "miracles" that defy the medical diagnosis, there are dozens of "tragicals" that don't, but you never hear about them . Joy and gloating are public, grief and stupidity are private. Then too, there is the neutral state of the women who take that advice. You can't prove that they would have died, so they don't count.
Also, for every one of those doctor-defying births, there are hundreds of vague anecdotes, repeating ad nauseum.
This is how superstition lives and flourishes among us. These assholes can't even be sued for their bad advice because they never actually came out and told someone to defy their doctor.

Yes, it is. That's exactly what it is.
If the subject were whether or not men's lives should be saved instead of microscopic specks of cells, or whether the government should be interfering in decisions men make about their own medical care, you wouldn't even be questioning it. You'd just be screaming about the Constitution.

The medical machine at least has a demonstrated track record of success. God, on the other hand? There's no evidence such an entity even exists, much less that it intervenes to address medical problems.

Well, every time we put our faith in God and die, the Faithful say it was also god’s will.
So if God may or may not kill me at any point, for reasons that aren’t revealed to us, why in the FUCK would i depend on him?
Also, if the doctor screws up, my wife can sue him or her. God, not so much.
Confused?
