Precisely that reason. It's not persecution. It's not a Satanic plot. It's the simple fact that when you cloud watchers start screeching about the End of Days, and how it could be any minute, it gives us all (sane people that is) a colossal headache. Especially since people have seen chanting that same thing for almost 2 millennia now.

Because The Rapture is a vicious fantasy that only exists to moderate the resentments and frustrations of weak minded, fear driven people. The people who subscribe to The Rapture tend to imagine themselves as living in a world filled with demons (literally or figuratively) that might lead them astray. If they relax their guard, even for a moment, they will be led off the path and be at the mercy of the wrathful monster they imagine their god to be. All the while they are surrounded by happy people who are peacefully living their lives. This makes The Rapture crowd intensely jealous: other people have happiness here and now, but he or she only has a fear fueled assurance of "salvation." They can't even admit that they are jealous as that would be coveting their "sinful" lifestyles.
For some one who is isolated by fear, the thought of being literally lifted away, along with a host of god-approved potential friends is irresistible. Throw in the revenge fantasy of The Tribulation to torment all those people he or she feels jealous of, and the cake is very well iced. This is the reason why I detest Rapture mythology: not because it is extra-biblical but because it is TOXIC!
If you don't believe me, check out Rapture Ready. Read all the posts from people who complain (overtly or subtly) about their loneliness and sense of isolation. They have welded themselves into cages of fear, and then they complain about being alone. They think that nursing their fantasies about The Rapture is helping, but they are really just making their situation worse.
