Atheism is a religion. You do not have to believe in an omnipotent, omniscient, omnipresent, and eternal Entity to be religious. Neither Buddhism, nor Taoism, nor Confucianism believe in such an Entity. Atheism is very dogmatic and it exhibits religious enthusiasm. It seeks to make converts, and it believes that everyone that is not an Atheist is blind to its spiritual truths. In the Atheist's world, people that reject Atheism's core religious beliefs are lost. As with most religious movements, there is not one single comprehensive belief other than to the preposition that God exists is false. When you examine the various beliefs among Atheists you find as many beliefs as there are Atheists. The best way to find out what an Atheist believes is to ask her. For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them. Never assume that an Atheist has any idea what Atheism is. Despite the claim that all Atheists are more intelligent and more moral than theists, there are plenty of stupid and immoral Atheists.

For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
No fucking Atheists say that, dipshit. They don't pray. What part of Atheism is the complete absence of belief in any god (including yours) has gone over your head?
It is true that the dictionary definition of Atheism is involves set of beliefs on par with religions and religion-like structures that have no deities.
However, that does not make Atheism in any of it's forms a religion (in the commonly defined way), even if a few extremists treat it as such.
And even if it is a religion, "Atheists" who pray would be *very* confused as to what words mean.
Nemoque, honey, 20% of *any group* are stupid. You can find 20% of americans who think Obama is secretly a Klingon. You can find 20% of some group who think we breathe propane fumes. It's pretty much a given that 20% of any group of humans will be utter wingbats.
Atheism is very dogmatic [...] When you examine the various beliefs among Atheists you find as many beliefs as there are Atheists.
Something tells me Nemoque hasn't thought this paragraph through very well.
Nemoque failed to mention that most damning truth about the evil Vatican-supported lie that is Athiesm. Athiesm gave us the worst dictators the world has ever known, from Adolfo Hitler, to Joseph Stalin, to Mao Zedong, to Pol Pot, to Nelson Mandela, to Hugo Chavez, to Barack Obama. Athiesm is the ultimate slap in the face to morality and is a gateway drug into greater false religions like Catholicism, Islam, and Satanism.
I've got news for you: when we pray to or otherwise invoke the name of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, we're joking.
(Although I do find it funny that my iPhone's autocorrect feature capitalized the name of the FSM...)
Oh, look, the Poe's back.
I've told you before, PC, you need to forget the rules of grammar and spelling, use more CAPSLOCK, don't forget the !!!!!'s and then you'll get the hang of being a fundy.
Atheism is a religion.
And then you say "there is not one single comprehensive belief other than to the preposition that God exists is false. "
Does not compute.
it believes that everyone that is not an Atheist is blind to its spiritual truths.
What spiritual truths?
In the Atheist's world, people that reject Atheism's core religious beliefs are lost.
Lost how?
Next you'll tell us that atheists view Dawkins as the Great Shepherd looking for his sheep. I don't think so.
For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
Citation needed for this rather confused 20 percent.
Never assume that an Atheist has any idea what Atheism is.
I'm not too sure you know what it is either.
@PC: I like the wrong spelling of atheism, that was a nice touch. Overall I think your Poe-ing has gotten better. You are almost funny now.
@OP: The best way to find out what an Atheist believes is to ask her.
What about that, a pearl of wisdom between all that other drivel. Maybe you should follow your own advice.
Atheism is a religion.
Bald is a hair color! Colorless paint will make your house see through! Up is just another form of Down!
people that reject Atheism's core religious beliefs are lost.
Atheism has core beliefs? I thought it was simpler than that: if you don't believe in god, you are an atheist.
For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
*facepalm*
Those are not atheists. If they pray to a god, and they believe that god answers them, then they believe said god exists. Atheists do not believe a god exists. That's what makes them atheists.
Well ... if Goddamnsonofabitch! is a prayer, I guess I'm guilty. Old habits die hard. As for atheism being a religion:
1. Show me the hierarchy that is using it for power and profit.
2. Why would I expect a rational conclusion from someone that lives inside a delusional bubble? Your thought processes are constrained by your frame of reference, so everything will conform to your prejudices.
Once again, and repeat as necessary:

I see the similarity. We don't have a deity, altar, clergy, dogma, collection plate, theology, vestments, testaments, miracles or superstitions, while religions do! I swear it's like looking at identical twins.
Atheism can be very dogmatic, as in saying "there are no gods", but most atheists say "I see no evidence for the existence of any gods, and until I do, I will live my life as if there are no gods". That's hardly dogmatic. Oh, and atheists don't believe in ANY gods, your God included. The way you feel about Ganesh, Buddha and Quetalcoatl, is the way we atheists feel about God/Allah/YHWH.
All atheists are not more intelligent and more moral than theists. There are idiots in all religions and lack of religions. Many people, who grow up as Christians, come to the realization, through education and analysis, that there is no evidence for the existence of any gods. The more intelligent you are, the easier it is to achieve higher education.
For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
Yeah sure. And 20% of all vegetarians do regularly eat meat.
I guess civilian must be a military rank, the ocean is now a continent, naked is clothes, empty is full, and clear is a color.
Now all rise for the atheist pledge of stuff we apparently think is dogma.
" " and done.
For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
Words have meanings, you know. If someone who makes $20 million per year starts calling him/herself poor does that constitute proof that poor people make more money than most rich people? Or is it proof that that person isn't part of that group in the first place?
Never assume that an Atheist has any idea what Atheism is.
I agree. You shouldn't assume anything about people's beliefs or non-beliefs. You also shouldn't assume that YOU know anything about atheism as you are including people in that category who contradict the very definition of the word to the point where it's logically impossible. You might as well have a fascist anarchist.
@PC: "Athiesm is ... a gateway drug into greater false religions like Catholicism, Islam, and Satanism."
... and don't forget - it encourages people to be liberals, Yankees*, non-Christians**, pansy-assed wine-tasters, opera fans, Volvo drivers, NPR contributors, illegal aliens, guys who don’t like sports, women who wear pants, gay marriage advocates, people who buy "green" products or drive hybrids, people who read the NIV Bible instead of the KJV and people who think their grandmother was a monkey.
* Northerners, not the baseball team
** anyone who's not a real Christian.
I was going to meh it, then I read this:
> For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them.
What the *@#$! Citation needed!
Buddhism. A religion without a deity that promises nothing, and delivers .
Organisations related to Buddhism - especially charities - have tax exemption, as it is defined as a religion. Yet, here in the UK at least, $cientology Orgs etc have to pay tax on their income (Auditing, courses & so on). Who'd have thunk it?
You right-wing fundies claim that your 'belief' isn't a religion, but is a 'personal relationship with Jesus'.
(*Gets mobile phone out of pocket *)
...now, do you want to make that call to the IRS, or shall I...?
"For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them."
All too easy. [/Darth Vader]:
'[citation Seriously Fucking needed]'
If people like this said something like, scientism is a religion, materialism is a religion, they might be on firmer ground, and be able to make a cogent case, or in any case, more cogent than this.
What are the "spiritual truths" of atheism, I wonder?
You can't make a religion out of a merely negative statement. It has to have some positive element.
@ProtestantCrusader
Are you high? And I should probably note it looks like you share a work enviroment with a regular. That's gotta be fun. Or maybe they're just the local internet provider. Either way it makes reviewing the IP funny as hell.
If you're going to crusade against something, know what it is first, otherwise you'll be doing your Quixote impression going after those windmills.
"For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them"
Those 20% are not atheists you dumb fuck
"For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them. "
20% of any group of people are total dolts. That includes either you or those "atheists." Quite possibly both.
>> , there is not one single comprehensive belief other than to the preposition that God exists is false. <<
A preposition is what you don't want to end a sentence with.
"There are plenty of stupid and immoral Atheists."
True, but the number of stupid and immoral fundies far exceeds that.
"When you examine the various beliefs among Atheists you find as many beliefs as there are Atheists. The best way to find out what an Atheist believes is to ask her."
"Never assume that an Atheist has any idea what Atheism is. Despite the claim that all Atheists are more intelligent and more moral than theists, there are plenty of stupid and immoral Atheists."
Both those excerpts are refreshingly accurate. The rest of this is bullshit.
Religion is the belief in something without any empirical evidence. There is no empirical evidence that God exists. On the other hand, there's a great deal of evidence that he doesn't exist: he's invisible and undetectable by any known means, he doesn't appear to do anything or answer prayers, and there are 40,000 different opinions about who he is, what he wants and what his powers are. The last alone is enough to conclude that even if he exists, he has no interest in us and no one has any idea who he is or what he does.
So....
Make up your minds, morons.
Is atheism a religion? Or is it "freedom from religion"?
Take your pick, it can't be both ways.
As with most religious movements, there is not one single comprehensive belief other than to the preposition that God exists is false.
Most religions claim that God does not exist? Do you even read what you write?
"For instance, 20 percent of those calling themselves Atheist say that they pray to God and God answers them."
Evidently it's becoming a very popular name for pet owners who happen to be atheists!
Which is it: is the statistic made up, is it some kind of error, or are people really that stupid. You people can't seem to agree except that he must, somehow, be wrong because you, certainly, are not.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
