most white male atheism is born out of the white supremacist belief that there is no greater power in the universe than white men and that’s just tea
[revivesuburbia]
not to be “that guy” but the notion that “greater power” is equal to a white man was pretty much my previous religion’s doctrine

white supremacy doesn’t need a single doctrine in order to establish itself, it’s already well-established that religion has often been used as a tool of racism. this runs alongside, not against, the fact that a bulk of white atheism comes from establishing the white self as the god figure, just without the ritualistic trappings of organized religion, even though there’s a violently evangelical way that white people tend to talk about atheism, especially in the face of theistic people of color.

With or without sugar?
I'm an atheist that happens to be white (but not male), and I definitely don't think "no greater power in the universe than white men".
If anything, I'd say "no greater whiners, blind to their own YUGE privilege, than white supremacist man-boys".
I lack belief in gods and religions. The more I learned about it all, the less sense it made, until there was nothing left.
Please point out the "violently evangelical way" in how I talked about atheism, honey-bunny.

Oh, lack-of-heaven fucking forfend that we ever explain why we don't believe in nonsense instead of thinking 'ok, that stuff's bollocks, but it's good enough for BME people.'

Your move.
white male atheism
Invalid category.
Btw, the Turks, the Japanese, and a number of other ethnic groups consider themselves to be superior too. It's not just whites.
I'd say hyperbole, but between the Amazing Asshole, Sam Harris and Charles Murray, vocal atheism has been colonized by white supremacists. I'm not even sure honeybruh is wrong about, say, AA's motivation for being an atheist.
Once a person makes the asinine conclusion that all criticism of religion is the same thing as criticizing in a "violently evangelical way", then they paint atheists into an impossible corner. You can't even *state* what your atheist position *is* without that effectively being a criticism of religion because you're stating that you think it's mistaken to believe in a god.
Once that has been set up, then it's easy to view the way "white people tend to talk" about atheism as being somehow mean-spirited and in-your-face because you've set up a standard where the only way to be an atheist without being in-your-face about it is to be closeted about it and *never* mention it.
Then let's point out that this post *also* contains the common bullshit of trying to pretend that atheists also believe in gods too, by trying to use a metaphorical fuzzy meaning of "god" as "anything you happen to worship, whether a mundane mortal thing or not". "Establishing the white self as the god figure" is a phrase that makes me go, "fuck you, liar" for two reasons, first off it's not even true that atheism has anything to do with white supremacist views, and secondly even if it *was* true, that would still be the same kind of thing as saying, "well, you worship [money, science, history, whatever], therefore you aren't really an atheist because I have claimed you worship something."
You know, Mormon theology has been fairly racist.. Black skin is a punishment from god, white is a reward.
One time they told me that a black guy was SUCH a goid Mormon, he woke up one morning and god had turned him white. I had a problem with that.
I left that faith, still believing in god, but not in LDS theology.
The atheism forned lster when none of the other faiths made any more sense. Nothing about whites being the superior race...
The reason a lot of atheists come off as assholes is because there is a segment of American society that says we are amoral, that we cannot be true Americans (the guy who said that was a former President), and that thinks we are dangerous to be around because we'll corrupt them to Hell. I'm sure many pagans don't have very fond views of the dominant religion either.
That said, if atheism derives from white male supremacy, what religion would you have me believe?
White male supremacy (and it's not always apparent which is governing his ego more strongly, the "white" or the "male") is the thing that gave us all those illustrations of Jesus as a near-blond guy just glowing warmly with his own righteous whiteness. Some people can't stand the thought of worshiping a swarthy middle-easterner, and that was true long before the xenophobia of the twenty-first century. I believe Sunday morning is still widely regarded as the most segregated time of the week in Christendom.
But atheists ...well, we don't go in for worshiping anybody, in general, so if you want to be admired for your whiteness or maleness, the pulpit is a lot better bet than atheism, plus you get to pass the collection plate.
I'm annoyed, because while there are several nice white atheists, some of them are really crap. And white supremacy is indeed woven into some religious variants. I smell a WTF, but the facts provided are not false enough for me to WTF.
You're so full of shit. I'm sure all white male atheists such as myself see ourselves as pretty much an insignificant speck in a vast, vast universe. While humans have accomplished so much, there's still so much more that we are unable to do because the power of nature is greater.
Confused?
