What everyone seems to be missing, which I think is due to propaganda, is that gays already have the same rights as straights. They just don't want those rights. No one in the United States can marry "who they want". They can marry someone of the opposite gender. Straights, as well as gays, have just as much right to marry as anyone else. It just has to be with someone of the opposite sex.
So the debate shouldn't be whether they have the same rights or not. Clearly they do. Its whether we, as a society, want people of the same sex to enter into marriage, gay or straight.
To say its an issue of rights is both irresponsible and alarmist, and makes your position factually incorrect.
And no, it isn't "separate but equal". There is no difference at all in how a gay person may exercise the institution of marriage than a straight person. And honestly, that's their issue. It is the exact same as a person who is straight. They want something that is different. They want something tailored made for them.
I'm against it, but I'm not going to lose sleep if it ends up passing. But I will be absolutely furious if the will of the people is thwarted by judicial tyranny under the guise of "rights". One of our biggest problems as a society is that the people are ignored, and men in black robes deciding our future reeks of an Oligarchy.

What everyone seems to be missing, which I think is due to propaganda, is that Negroes already have the same rights as Whites. They just don't want those rights. No one in Texas can marry "who they want". They can marry someone of the same race. Negroes, as well as Whites, have just as much right to marry as anyone else. It just has to be with someone of the same race.

The argument is irrelevant because no straight person would ever even try to marry someone of the same sex. The issue is that Straight people can marry the ones they love and get benefits, like combined pension, from it. Gay people cannot do this because the ones they love are of the same sex and the government will not honour same sex spouses.
Gay people who want to get married are not asking for different rights. You say they have the same rights now; well, if they are allowed to marry, you and them will still have the same rights. You would have the right to marry someone of the same sex, just as they do.
As a straight girl, I 'want' to marry my boyfriend. If I were a gay girl, I would 'want' to marry my girlfriend.
So, I'm straight, so I can exercise the institution of marriage (wtf?) to marry who I 'want'. If I'm gay, I can't. Therefore, this is an issue of equal application of the law.
That is just about the most stupid argument I have heard. What if the rule of the land was that gay people have the right to marry and sraight people don't? (Maybe, as determined on a state-by-state basis, they can have "civil unions"). It would be fair, right? After all, they have the same right! They can marry someone of their same gender!

Do you notice the fault in this? Thats like saying that everyone has the right to wear size 4 jeans.
Let's think about this... Now, what is it that makes homosexuals a minority? Oh yeah! Gay boys don't want to marry girls and gay girls don't want to marry boys.
Here's a little known fact, Silverline: Homosexuals don't DATE, or even WANT to date, the opposite sex! I know, crazy, huh? THAT'S why they're different than straight people which makes them a minority in our society. I've dated plenty of guys who were married to women and some even had kids, not one of them ever regretted being honest with themselves and coming out. So, you see, your brilliant insight (the one that "everyone seems to be missing") has been practiced for generations and it has failed miserably, tearing apart families and destroying lives.
You shouldn't worry about it though because when gay marriage is legal you can marry your buddy if you want to - you don't even have to be gay to do it - see, same rights. All equal and stuff.
Idiot.

But you believe you have a "right" to decide mine and my wife's and our friends' futures? That reeks of something to me, too, but it's not "Oligarchy." More like pure bigoted horseshit.
Fuck yourself with an immersion blender.
So they can only marry people that they don't want to fuck. Sounds like a terrible relationship. But will they have the same rights if... you what? Fuck You! I'm not gay, but I'm sick of you people, bitching about your rights, and how you're always being persecuted! No-one gives a fuck about you or your opinion! You are not oppressed, no-one is infringing on your rights and no-one is trying to destroy the fabric of your stupid American society. SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU SOUND LIKE A BROKEN RECORD PLAYER!
Hey genius, what part of "gay people do not want to marry someone of the opposite sex" do you NOT understand? Why should straight people be the only ones allowed to marry the people they love? Infertile heterosexual couples exist, so lack of reproduction isn't a reason.
No one in the United States can marry "who they want". They can marry someone of the opposite gender. Straights, as well as gays, have just as much right to marry as anyone else.
Don't most straight people want to marry someone of the opposite sex?
And congratulations mike-mike ! Welcome to the board! (Though I am sorry about the ban-though you were courageous to take it from a site you normally visit. The few times I post things (because I feel bad about it) I usually skulk around RR or places like that.)

A number of states, Florida included, condone firing a person from their job for being lesbian or gay. I'd say that falls right smack dab in the middle of "rights".
Again:
Let's say you're in a country which restricts religious freedoms. You want to be a Baptist and go to a Baptist church. TOUGH SHIT! You have the same rights as everybody else who subscribes to, say, Scientology--you can go to mosque.
What's that? You don't believe in Scientology? You don't agree with it? TOUGH SHIT! You still have the same rights as everyone else still! It's all YOUR damn fault if you choose something different.
This line of reasoning is semi-valid. What exactly are anyone's rights when it comes to marriage? He says everyone has the right to marry someone of the opposite sex. They do, but should they? Is that a valid right? Is it the government's role to define marriage at all, or is that sort of thing personal business that the government should stay out of?
As for the "everyone has the right to marry someone they love" argument that homosexual supporters tend to use... do you have that right? What defines love? What if I loved and wanted to marry someone who did not feel the same way about me? You could change it from "everyone" to "every couple." But they you've deprived me of right to marry someone I love, much like the current situation deprives homosexuals of it. How is that any different? And if you say it's different because of the lack of consent, then you're talking about the other person's rights, which themselves may or may not be valid. Ethically speaking, this is a very complex issue.
Incidentally, I don't think anyone has a right to marry anyone. Some people can't handle marriage and harm themselves and others after getting married. More importantly, the concept of marriage is so convoluted and bogged down by expectations, some of which are unreasonable, that few people really understand what marriage in our culture is until they're in it. I think that's a big factor in the divorce rate. I say if two people want to get married, they have to prove they understand what they're in for, and prove they can handle it.
You're absolutely right. Marries heterosexuals have rights that single people and homosexuals don't. They pay tax, married people (who share an income and therefore can afford a house) receive tax. It's really unfair. Abolish tax breaks for thye married and nobody will have an argument. I mean, how out of date is a law that gives preference based on marital status?
So by that logic, you would be perfectly happy if ONLY gay people could marry?
I mean, you wouldn't be able to marry who you want, but you could marry some guy instead! 'Equal' rights FTW!

What everyone seems to be missing, which I think is due to propaganda, is that blacks already have the same rights as whites. They just don't want those rights. No one in the United States can marry "who they want". They can marry someone of the same color. Whites, as well as blacks, have just as much right to marry as anyone else. It just has to be with someone of the same color.
Fixed
Failed logic, motivated deafness. Equal rights meaning equal rights today, not rights equivalent to those in the past, which were not equal either. You're then lying when you claim that the rights of heterosexuals would be altered by allowing gay people to marry. A type of slippery slope conspiracy theory for panic that has no basis in reality. "Homophobic logic".
And good points about racism above, there's even a comeback of the stupid "slavery is good for black people" in the US today.
Confused?
