Well, it's said that "Pacific Rim" - with the fact that the 'Kaiju' emerge via a dimensional portal deep under the ocean, who are battled by Jaegers piloted by two humans 'Drifted' or Synchronised neurologically - was heavily inspired by "Neon Genesis Evangelion"; that genre-defining anime with it's heavy Christian symbolism, battles against 'Angels', therefore...! And of course, there's the equivalent - only more so - in Namco's '6-seat mini-cinema' laserdisc upgrade, "Galaxian IV: Attack of the Zolgear": with the titular galactic terror 'Zolgear', a huge planet-sized biomechanical lifeform that could eat Cthulhu as a snack.
