Having taken two income tax classes in law school I can tell you that any type of "compensation" you receive is taxable. Even if you barter and receive chickens, your profit in chickens is taxable. As a side note, people may not like paying taxes but we do need to pay them and we do get something from paying them, like tornado warnings, new Bridges and roads, etc etc. People who try to scam their way out of paying taxes are just freeloaders, and we all have to take up their slack.
