I'm not surprised that Ontario and California (Sodom and Gomorrah) are leading the charge. But, there is a remnant that stands against them in Jesus name. The law tells nursing home staff to address residents as they prefer. Would you object if John Smith asked to be addressed as "Mr. Smith" instead of "John?" If John wants to be addressed as "Jane," why is it difficult or problematic for the staff to do it? They will probably laugh at it in the staff room, just as they probably laugh at the fact that John/Jane dribbles food at supper.
It's ludicrous that nursing homes assume that their residents have no sex life or interest. Unless someone poses a threat, they deserve the same respect, consideration and privacy as 20-somethings.
Technically if I'm supposed to be looking after old frail Davinia and every day I address her as 'Dave' even after being asked repeatedly not to, and make her a cake with 'DAVE' written across it, and caper about in her room chanting "Dave, Dave, Dave," that's what the stiff fines and possible jail time are for. It's not for an accidental misuse of the wrong pronoun or anything.
There's always weird things going on with old people who require care, so any carer worth their salt gets a good grounding in how each individual person likes to be treated before the care begins. Some old codger says he's a Martian, at that stage it might well be better to indulge him anyway. Next to something like that, transsexuality is trivial and anyone who can't cope with it shouldn't even be in the job.
And I genuinely hope Lady C is treated well in her senior years.

What's the big deal about calling someone by whatever appellation they prefer? I've got much more important things to worry about than this nonsense. Humor the elderly person, or any person for that matter. It neither picks your pocket nor breaks your leg, as per Jefferson. It does you nothing!
On the one hand, this sounds absurd, but on the other hand, it's the California state legislature, so it might be real...
The closest I could find on what Lady Checkplease is referring to outside of right wing leaning was from the NY Post. Here's the first paragraph of the article.
Employers and landlords who intentionally and consistently ignore using pronouns such as “ze/hir” to refer to transgender workers and tenants who request them may be subject to fines as high as $250,000.
If one does it on accident, they won't be fined. It's the chronic offenders as far as employment and housing is concerned that will be hit with it.

Elderly people deserve a little respect, in the twilight of their lives. If they happen to be transgender, which would be only a few people, it isn't much to ask to be addressed correctly.

The title of this has very different implications from the actual law.
The new law applies only to long term care facilities and their employees, where the relationship between staff and residents has a power imbalance that's difficult to imagine for people who have never had any personal experience with it. Staff pretty well control every aspect of the lives of their residents, in a way that you don't normally see between adults outside of the military or prison. A facility intentionally treating their residents as the wrong gender can be the sort of ongoing, hellish abuse that drives already very vulnerable people to suicide. There's no reason to have a "religious exemption" to a law against abuse. If your religion prevents you calling a transgender person by their proper pronouns, then your rights still end where another person's right to live free of abuse begin.
