Chaosium, is a company whose success is built almost entirely on marketing works derived from the fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. They're crowdfunding a clone of the Forbidden Stars board game for much the same reason that Unfathomable is a Lovecraftian clone of the Battlestar Galatica board game; Lovecraft's work is popular and in the public domain, so it's a cheap substitute for pricier IPs. They've decided that the name of the outer god Shub-Niggurath could conceivably offend people, so not only did they change it, but they feel like they have to crow about why.
