The families of those killed in the Virginia Tech massacre may not be able to grieve in peace at the funerals of those they lost. An anti-gay religious group known for protesting at the funerals of American soldiers killed in Iraq is planning on appearing at services for those killed on Monday as well.
The Topeka, Kan.-based Westboro Baptist Church (WBC), which is not affiliated with any national Baptist organization, announced plans to protest at victims’ funerals only hours after 32 people were killed in the worst mass shooting in U.S. history. They also may protest at other events on the Virginia Tech campus.
The organization, founded and led by Fred Phelps, believes the United States has condemned itself to destruction by accepting homosexuality and other “sins of the flesh.” Phelps’ daughter, Shirley Phelps-Roper, said the Virginia Tech teachers and students who died on Monday brought their fate upon themselves by not being true Christians.

The Phelps clan are not so much fundies as they are members of a cult, although the lines do blur. They aren't so concerned with changing the world as they seem to be with using an extreme protest to isolate their members from the world and in so doing maintain absolute control over them. They make a lot more sense when you think of them like that.
If the loss of a beloved one wasn't bad enough, ruining some lifes even more by attending funerals with signs "God hates fags" and "This happened because America allows homosexuality" or crap like that should be capital crime and punished with prison not under ten years.
@sykotik: preferably not phelps. Shooting him would make him martyr, shooting anyone else would question Phelpses authority.
Has anyone read Phelps Wikipedia bio? It seems really strange. Although he shows signs of fundyism (attending, but dropping out of Bob Jones, i.e.) he also shows some contradictory signs. His law firm apparently devoted itself to civil rights (for blacks, not gays of course) cases, and he even sued Regan for appointing an ambassador to the Vatican, claiming this was a violation of church and state. I suppose you could argue that this is an anti-catholic bias, but must fundies deny that such a seperation exists at all.
It goes on to the document his fall into hatred and extreme fundyism, and even offers interesting and believable psychological explanations. Read it.
I agree that WBC is a bunch of hateful jackasses, but if we get the right to limit one group's free speech, no matter how idiotic and malicious it is, then the government might start to limit every idea that it doesn't like. Besides, who would we mock on here if such displays of verbal diarrhea were banned?
Even still, why couldn't Cho Seung-Hui kill 32 of them instead?
My fantasy is that an F5 tornado will develop around the 3700 block of SW 12th Street in Topeka, Kansas one Sunday morning when Fred, Shirley and the rest of the cult are having their services, pick up the entire compound and deposit the whole thing in the middle of Perry Lake (about 12 miles to the northwest).
The only thing is that I wouldn't wish an F5 tornado on the rest of Topeka, who have already suffered far too much on account of this psycho!
Alternatively, I'd like for Fred Phelps to die a horrible, lingering death and then have one million people outside Westboro Baptist during his funeral making so much noise that the funeral could not be conducted.
No worries, the Patriot Guard will always be one step ahead of this horse's ass. The families won't even catch a glimpse of the Phelps cult thanks to all the motorcycles. As much as Phelps erodes my faith in humanity, the Patriot Guard redeems humanity for me. Bless 'em.
A friend of mine thinks someone should walk up to Phelps (or a member of his clan) shoot them in the head, and then ask the rest of them why God willed it to happen. No, no, no, it's only when something bad happens to someone else that it's God's will. When fundies themselves are subject to disasters, loss of life, etc., the perpetrator was influenced by Satan.
Even still, why couldn't Cho Seung-Hui kill 32 of them instead? The good die young, the evil are allowed to live. It's always been that way, hasn't it?
I don't get it. Why would fundies want to protest the funerals of school shooting victims? Or Iraq war casualties for that matter?
WBC members believe that since America "permits" homosexuality, anything and everything American is pure evil. Therefore, they believe anything negative that happens to America or her citizens is the result of God's anger toward the tolerance of homosexuality (or something like that). Their dumb protests are supposed to be reminders of this.
I saw these clowns in my city several years ago, and people were throwing rocks at them. They were using their stupid signs as shields. It was pretty funny.
Not being true Christians?, I find this comment repulsive. How can be Christian, not just not showing sympathy for them and comforting, but also tormenting their families for their only welfare, to bring publicity upon themselves?, Repulsive.
Sick, sick, sick...
If I can find the link to the good website I found about Phelps, I'll post it here. The guy is insane, according to his kids who have escaped his cult. He beat them almost every day. NO ONE like that has the right to lecture others on morality.

The world can be just fine without you morons.
And once again reverend attention whore and his band of slaves get all the publicity they want. Why doesn't the news just ignore these cretins like they ignore every unwashed would-be prophet who stands on the corner and screeches, "the end is near, repent!"
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
