I'm pro-multiculture, but for stupidity like this, even I am tempted to say "If this doesn't fit you, you can get out of here!".

Now you know why some people are anti-muslim. I used to go to a muslim convention every year and this crap was everywhere. That is in addition to what I see at muslim sites on the internet.

Consider this: Muslims are not pro-multiculture. Islam must reign supreme. There are lots of muslim refugees in Sweden. What are the implications for your multicultural self?

I've been to Oman many times. I've spent a lot of time in the country working on various projects. My business hosts in Muscat (the capital) made sure that I knew where the local Christian church was, in case I wanted to attend services (I'm not a Christian, so I never went). Also, there's none of the Sunni vs. Shea crap that is found in other countries. When Sultan Qaboos took power in 1970, he said that Muslims are Muslims...they all worship together in the same mosques. The only way you can tell them apart is by their beards (well, except for the women and children). This, I believe, is why Oman is such a stable country. I've been to many countries in the Middle East, and Oman is hands down my favorite. I could live there (with lots of air conditioning).

Christianity, as a part of western culture, is contaminated by the attitudes of western culture. When they want to go on a jihad they are restrained by the western freedom of religion tradition, both by the overt legal tradition and the subconscious emotional reaction to jihad being a bad thing.

Muslim cultures have no such tradition. There is nothing holding them back from jihad except when it is not in the interest of the local dictator or western infidels get themselves involved.

At the muslim conventions I was having flashbacks to reading catholic newsweeklys many years before. The attitudes were very similar, one difference being while catholic would-be theocrats tried to shoehorn their sharia into western traditions of freedom, the muslims didn't. Their approach was "we have to obey god in a Christian unbeliever country that outlaws obeying god, so how do we obey god and escape being arrested?".

I can see how crowds of Muslims would behave exactly as Mr. Spak described. However, it is also correct to say that not all Muslims are like that. It appears that the event that had attracted all those thousands of Muslims had attracted ones that all thought the same way. And why should we be surprised? It's like going to a Trump rally, and finding that everyone there is a Trump supporter. It doesn't mean that all Muslims all over the World think the same way. Radicals will flock together. Moderates will do likewise.

Still, I have said before and I'll say it again. Religion is stupid. All of it. Religion is what leads people to think and act like those people Mr. Spak encountered. Rather than dismiss Mr. Spak, you should all be a bit more open minded. Just don't let it drive any of you into hate mode.

Someone is obviously confused by the notion of Muslims assimilating into Western culture.

A certain flag's design on a hijab, at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations of a certain monarch - and head of the state religion: the Church of England - thus demonstrating loyalty to Queen. Country. Flag. Allah. And in that order.

A former silver medallist member of Team GB, whose father is very much pro-British. Whose son even helped non-Muslim people during floods several years ago.

Someone who came to Britain from Somalia at age eight: who barely spoke the language. As of 1st January this year, now has the appelation 'Sir' before his name.

In the same Olympics - 2012 London - the entry of the team from Azerbaijan. The only other country, apart from Iran, that is Shia Muslim.

But apparently, women not wearing a hijab can confuse some, I guess. Especially those who Did Not Do The Research.

Least of all the fact that perhaps there are Muslims who prefer living in a secular democracy based on Rule of Law. Or wanting to represent one's country via the spirit of sporting competition. Or a Muslim country that is not only pro-US, but has full diplomatic relations with Israel.

Jordan must be an absolute hotbed of IS support, eh? That's why it's air force's F-16s fought against the US forces in "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen", because the Decepticons are the enemy of Freedom, amirite?! [/Doug Piranha-levels of sarcasm]

Oman must be riddled with IS supporters. Right? Strange then, how this hotbed of terrorists is so allied to Britain, that it's own Caliph: the Sultan of Oman bought the property next door to Clarence House: the residence of the Queen Mother, because he hated her so much, and they certainly weren't good friends, amirite II?!

Regardless of whether you agree with this or not, I don't think it's a good idea to have as many quotes sourced from comments here. I've noticed a fair few recently and I think it can only sow discord with members, and potentially lose readership, if we quote from the comments regularly. Sure, some comments may be worthy of publishing, but I think the criteria on this should be stricter.

For one, I don't think this quote is that bad. Sure, there's an argument that this is being very broad brush in its approach and is based solely on anecdotal evidence, but there is an issue within Islamic communities in the west (western Europe more so than the USA, admittedly) around integration, refusal to acknowledge issues surrounding their culture and a desire to further an Islamic agenda from their extremists. There seems to be an unease in tackling this, and I'm not specifically talking about from Muslims, but from society as a whole. In the UK Sharia courts exist to the detriment of women, gender segregation has occurred in Labour Party meetings and Islamic modesty culture is promoted through a misguided attempt at solidarity. Anti-Muslim bigotry is strengthened because this has been allowed to flourish and some liberals' refusal to call out issues within the Islamic society, as well as allying with Islamists (e.g. Linda Sarsour), has built an impression that liberals and leftists* are allied with Islamism to overthrow solid American values.

*Note: Some leftists seem to be allied with the Islamists; these being the far-leftists like George Galloway.

My view of what constitutes a muslim is formed by the thousands of people who organize a muslim convention, then go to a muslim convention and say "we are muslim".

I've never heard of a convention that called itself muslim and called for ignoring sharia. The fundies have a monopoly on muslim brand.

The only exception I've seen is in 2012 the Christian fundies in America were in full sharia panic. The muslims in response made the theme of their convention that year sharia is a cute fuzzy puppy. The presenters that year all without exception were anti sharia, saying if the people voted to not make sharia the law of the land that vote should be respected.

Every single other year the presenters said sharia is the only legitimate source of law. American law is based on the will of the people therefore American law and government was not legitimate and should be overthrown(they admitted that was not going to happen in this lifetime).

I suspect to counter the anti sharia noise they deliberately tracked down anti-sharia "muslims" to be the presenters at that conference that year only. The next year
it was back to the same old fundie sharia thing.
