Equal Opportunity Center Unia has opened an investigation into a visit of the extreme right-wing group "Right Wing Resistance" to the Fort of Breendonk. In addition, one of the members carried out a Hitler salute, reports VRT.

The facts date from August, when some members of the recently established Flemish branch of "Right wing resistance" visited the Fort of Breendonk. During World War II, the fort near Willebroek was used by the Nazis as a transit camp for Jews, resistance fighters and dissidents. Now the fort is a memorial place for the many victims of the war.

During the visit, G.V., member of the extreme right-wing group and son of a former MP of Vlaams Belang, got himself photographed while he issued the Hitler salute in the "casino". That is the room in the camp where the Germans drank and ate. The photo shows a swastika hanging on the wall, with the eagle and the SS inscription: "Meine Ehre Heisst Treue". Recently the man also posted a reaction to the fire in the asylum center in Bilzen on social media. "He would have waited better until they were in it," it was said.

"Right wing resistance" was founded in 2009 by the New Zealand white nationalist Kyle Chapman. In the meantime, the group has branches in countries such as Australia, Sweden, Scotland and recently also in Flanders. "This is a slap in the face of the victims and their relatives," says Dimitri Roden, curator of the fort. “Half of the deportees here did not survive the war. We have 100,000 visitors a year here and we have not experienced any such problems. On the contrary, most are heavily impressed by what happened here. "

Flemish Interest Chairman Tom Van Grieken and Member of Parliament Dries Van Langenhove distance themselves from the extreme right-wing group "Right Wing Resistance" and the man who brings the Hitler salute to Fort van Breendonk in a photo. "Same group of idiots that Vlaams Belang has distanced itself from several times in the past (Mars on Brussels)," says Van Grieken on Twitter. He refers to a web article in which he distanced himself in advance from the extreme right-wing Mars in Brussels in September. At that march there would have been (ties with) the extremist group "Blood bottom honor and loyalty." The name of "Right Wing Resistance" also appeared.

Dries Van Langenhove also does not leave the matter undisturbed on the microblog site. The representative of the people perceives in the first place a "another damage operation" in the media, now that his name is also quoted in the articles that brought the Hitler salute to light. "Despite the fact that I do not know these people and they are not members of Vlaams Belang or Schild en Vrienden, my name is mentioned no less than four times in the article." He does not accept that no response was requested.

On the other hand, De Morgen did publish a photo online in which Van Langenhove poses with the man who would have brought the Hitler salute during a party congress.
