He reminds me of fundies I have known who "lost" their faith.
When they realise it can't stand up against reality, and their own knowledge and experience of it, they (in my experience) go through a phase (denial) where they desperately try to cling to ANYTHING that they think may bolster their belief.
It leads to some weird shit and sometimes retarded statements like the above.
