It's one of the ways they fight the nagging little voice telling them that they are merely an offshoot of a standard, complete human form, not an equal puzzle piece in a symmetrical, complementary set of two. Because of this, their idea of beauty will always be incomplete, and everything they create will always be ugly, imperfect and uncanny in some way, no matter how hard they try.
