Just give “single people” the same rights ( soc security benefits and pension inheritance and medical decisions given to a significant other, equality in taxation).....
and the whole rationale for gay marriage goes away!

Um, then the rationale for marriage in general goes away by your brain-fried "logic." I mean, you know, since marriage isn't about love, only penis + vagina = total world domination.
Not necessarily fundie, but given the context probably is. I too, think the state should not deal in marriages at all, but since it does, allowing gay marriage is a matter of simple fairness.
It's sad the most religious individuals forget that the word and definition of marriage came from the pagans long before they coined the term as their own. Once you defeat them on the fact that marriage is a commitment and that LGBT couples have commitment they go after they view of what they conceive as natural. Defeat them yet again and they change it over to a document of laws that seem to only apply to heterosexuals. After you defeat them in a matter of law they either argue that gay marriage will destroy their definition of marriage cause harm to the marriage foundation of the US. Defeating them here is by far the easiest because statistics have shown that in countries and states were gay marriage is legal divorce rates have dropped. From there they say that marriage is traditional and its been like that for centuries. But we all know the wonderful effects of tradition, aka the inquisition, slavery and segregation, and now the dehumanization of lesbians and gays. They also forget that before 1200AD the church frowned upon marriage, and that their definition of marriage has been rewritten many times in those eight hundred years. After they have exhausted all means to uphold their irrational and unreasonable point of view, they say their stance is based on religious moral and ethical upbringing. However, if they had an ethical bone in their body they would understand that ignorance and conformity are the real destroyers of nations. Not lesbians and gays.
A step in the right direction, at least they're making it so that all citizens are treated like the humans they are, but then they say they believe that just so homosexual rights movements are stopped. In short this Ex-hippie is saying "Gays are icky, but if we give them rights I can ignore their existence."
when they were debating civil partnership in the UK, it was amazing how many right-wingers - who until then couldn't give a stuff! - came out with "why not give the same rights to blood relatives who live together?"
It's a neat spoiler that actually has merit. But in a different debate
Just take away “married people” rights ( soc security benefits and pension inheritance and medical decisions given to a significant other, equality in taxation).....

*fixed*
Actually people have done that in places like Sweden. The marriage rate for straight has gone down. What you do get is a number of "unreported marriages".
(Remember kids, you only count as married if you report it on a register. If you don't wish to "register your marriage" its just a pretty ceremony)
Aside from the homophobia, this is an excellent idea and one I have long endorsed. Why shouldn't two adult individuals be able to register themselves as domestic partners and reap the benefits suggested here?
@ Illuminatalie (et. al) "How can they be single if they have a significant other?"
What???? You've never heard about co-habitation? My "significant other" and I will have been together 19 years come January 26 and if we ever get legally married, it will be for the social security benefits, etc. The commitment part came long ago and has nothing to do with having a marriage license.
So is he recovering from being a hippie, or an ex-hippie?
Though I agree, domestic partnership benefits for all partnered "single" people is a good idea.
Confused?
So were we! You can find all of this, and more, on Fundies Say the Darndest Things!
