Both the original piece and this response suffer from a fundamentally disingenuous rationality. Both essayists know that nobody, including men, will ever care about men suffering sexual abuse. This changes everything and makes the parts about "wow, we really should care about men in prison and rape" totally null and void, complete (let's be frank) bullshit.

There are a huge number of men, myself included, who have been sexually assaulted numerous times and don't care. We will never come after the men or women who have done it. But the power plays infest every atom of the subject matter: we will never be supported in saying some people should just get over it, we will never be supported in networking and making ourselves known, on saying we just don't care. Because we all collectively treat a violated woman -- any amount of sexual violation of any woman -- as plausibly the source of a terrible, irretrievable scar upon the very soul. And clearly, there's some reason women feel this way and it's related in some way to sexual selection.

"Get over it" is obviously the advice billions of women have heard behind the scenes at various times; there are also men who have killed and been killed over women. That's not my point. My point is that if you try to approach this issue rationally and find some common ground between how male and female citizens want power and authority to treat them, you won't because you can't. Because men and women quite literally demand different attitudes and approaches to sex.

In other words, there is a bureaucratic, pseudo-intellectual gloss over the entire issue that will never lead anywhere. It is entirely fake. Sexual politics are the best example of a kind of Foucaultian nihilism you can find, it really is just fucking biopower.

Sure, you can sit around feigning moral superiority and pretend you or anyone else will devote societal pressure to the topic of male abuse. But you know they won't, the same way nobody devotes resources getting men to the doctor more often. You don't care and neither do the men.

Everyone knows that no MRA is interested in any of the movements he raves about. He just wants feminists to shut up.

Biopower is about changing mores of the day and age. It may be worse than 20 years ago, but it's a hell of a lot better than the raising of pistols against stolen virgins that defined most of history. And other such amusingly dire mating rituals.
