Pornography is addictive, it's a plague upon our nation, and it does lead directly to child molestation, rape, and human trafficking. Americans need to wake up to what pornography does to users, how it destroys families, and its connection to sex slavery.

It's nothing to do with sexuality and everything to do with the commodification and commercialisation of it. This creates a sexual industry that is, like most others, built around maximising profits at any cost with fuck-all concern for human rights and human decency, let alone gender equality.

The fact that pornography is kept out of sight and generally unregulated just makes things worse, but this is not the root problem. The root problem is the commodifcation of women in a society that commidifies everything. People can point to rare examples of pornography marketed to women and/or appealing to a feminist perspective but this says nothing about the nature of the overall industry.

And for the record, by "pornography" I don't mean "depiction of human sexuality". I mean commercial depiction of human sexuality for profit (and also reinforcing gender roles, which almost all pornography does).

@Jacobin Socialist: I don't know why people believe getting slapped with 20cm cock in the face or being carried around by a man while in weird position has anything to do with feminism. You can still be a strong successful woman and enjoy getting slapped with a big cock, I don't know why that's supposed to be contradictory.
The "problem" is that there is more porn that is marketed towards men than women, that's because, even though their numbers have increased, women still watch less porn than men. So, just like make-up is marketed to women and not men, because women use it much more, porn is marketed and made for men. If somebody wants that changed, they should start buying porn that is made for women.

So... those 'Child Beauty Contests' in the Midwest/Bible Belt States in the US are purely a figment of one's imagination? Pushy parents (all right-wing fundies, no exception) putting their little girls in adult-style costumes, in adult makeup, and making them act like adults before an audience in which (and I shit you not) all the males in the audience (and those in the auditorium were 75% male, at least) were armed with camcorders, to record the proceedings.

That's what I saw in a documentary about such. At least in the "Saw" & "Hostel" films, what one sees is just visual effects. That documentary - as well as "Jesus Camp" - is infinitely more terrifying: because what you're watching is real.

Can you say 'JonBenet Ramsey', Englein? I know you can.

I don't agree with this post, but I agree even less with this line of reasoning. That which cannot be eliminated may be worth reducing! (I'm just not convinced porn is worth reducing)

For those who like the post, try taking this to its logical conclusion. Let's say we all agree and outlaw guns. Just what do you think is going to happen? Do you really think that an important part of our culture is just going to disappear? No, it will go underground, and all the current regulations that help ensure the arms dealers are not breaking its incredibly important rules; will be gone.

It would be Prohibition all over again.

Guns're not going anywhere people. Let's keep it out in the open where we can make sure it stays safe.

p.s. if you're against banning guns, replace them with something you do want banned. How about some things that are already underground, and suffer from the very real problems that come with it. Copyright infringement? Just like prohibition. Nukes? The secrets are leaking like water in a strainer.

Question one: We're talking about a country where private possession and carriage of firearms is not merely a statutory or customary right subject to abolition by a simple legislative majority, but a constitutional right which can only be revoked by a process that has only been successfully seen through to completion seventeen times in 225 years. It seems to me that in such a context, guns are more or less inevitably going to be an important element in the development of the country's culture.

Question two: A culture where all the guns could be completely removed by any means not amounting to "a wizard did it" would probably not change noticeably when all the guns were removed. Such a culture would also be very different to modern mainstream American culture; the required changes to get to that point are a far more interesting topic than the changes that would follow.

Question three: As noted, I think the change that occurs when the guns are finally removed completely would be so minor as to be neither noticeably good nor noticeably bad. The changes required to get to that point are another matter.

Like there's a difference. The Constitootion is still just another piece of legislative paperwork. The problem is the pompous over-reverence in those who use it to defend their right to own and carry an object which has no other purpose than killing.

Thank goodness the Constitooootion doesn't mention the right to look at pornography. It can be debated much more openly and maturely.

Yes and no. People tend to come back for more material, but I can assure you I can hold myself in society without needing into the nearest locker every hour

And please stop throwing the word "addiction" around like some sort of magic doctor prognosis. If we start to label anything that gets people to waste free time regularly as an "addiction", we got a LONG list to do, as those can be transcribed from "pass time" or "hobby"

Child porn and rape porn (Really fucked up, but no-one's going to "filter the Internet") exists but doesn't even represent 1 % of this "phenomenon" (Understand : Something that exists since humans started to draw and carve stuff). Please explain "human trafficking" (can't we just talk about "slavery" already ?"

They can keep sleeping (or "sleeping" if you prefer) since it does nothing. Maybe you got the life choked out of you when you fell on a really bad example, but I can assure you it causes none of this

Just like a ban on guns or pornography would be. It's not the piece of paper that's important, it's the people who are willing to back it up.

First, I'm in favor of gun regulations, or even banning them, because, as I obviously didn't communicate very well in my first post, reducing violent crime is a good thing; just because it won't eliminate all violent crime, or even all gun crime, doesn't mean it's not worth doing. The same could apply to porn, if a strong causal link could be established.

How? I'd LOVE that, but that would require a cultural shift and those take time. Changing the Constitution is easier.
