However, a good friend of mine has an autistic son - and coping with this situation has not been easy for him. Despite the behavioural diffulty the boy is not a 'dysfunctional antisocial brat' - once you can see through the curtain that the autism has placed between him and the rest of the world his distinct and vulnerable personality can be seen.

I think he's confusing autism with ADD or ADHD. I've heard these arguments against those before, but never autism. If this guy has ever seen an autistic child, he'd know they are often the opposite of "brat" and tend to keep to themselves.

I think in the vast majority of cases, that autism is 100% real. there's a difference with someone who had severe mental handicaps, and a child being a brat. I don't see how The Bible is going to help raise a child any better then a man or woman with a published book about raising children.
There's an interesting parallel between serial killers and how they were raised. Most came from very strict religious backgrounds, in which their mothers, usually their mothers, bashed scriptures into their head day and night. They began to loathe other human beings for being sinful and thought they could play God.
I'm not saying that the Bible can't be a useful tool in teaching children good morals and how to live life according to a divine being; but you have to be really careful how you do it. There are such people as "radical Christians."

If this were the case, then you wouldn't have autistic children with "normal" siblings. But there are numerous cases of autistic and normal children, born of the same parents, raised in the same household in the same manner.

Well, not every kid whose parents SAY he's autistic really IS; same with the odd self-diagnosed autistic grownups you find occasionally on the Internet. (I once met a kid who was super-hyperactive, but displayed no outward signs of autism. Communicated well with people of all ages, really intelligent, had no trouble expressing or identifying with emotions. Regular kid, just hyper. I'm quite sure he wasn't autistic, though his parents excused his hyperactivity as "autism".)

Autism is a REAL condition, NOT just an "excuse" for "normal" kids (what the freak is "normal" anyway?) to become "dysfunctional, antisocial brats". I have Aspergers Syndrome and ADHD (also a real condition), and I was a very good, sweet, outgoing kid and I had a lot of friends...sure I acted out at times, but all kids do (don't pretend that you never did) and my parents were quite strict up until I was 13! I'm the only kid in my family with autism and if you said this BS to my mom, she would ROYALLY fark you up-so would my stepdad (if he were alive), and my birth father would (he's an ex-Marine)...and rightfully so! That said, screw you with a red-hot poker, give yourself a bunch of paper cuts and bathe in salted lemon juice, step on a Lego followed by a marble, eat crap and live with that taste in your mouth and the severe burns to your butt! I don't usually wish such horrible things on people, but that just goes to show what an insensitive jerk this "person" is!
