[Does anyone else find this statement completely ironic?]

The president of an Illinois-based pro-family group says many fans of the Fox News Channel would be surprised -- and perhaps even upset -- to know that the network, which describes itself as "fair and balanced," supports a conference for homosexual journalists.

What, so people are upset that Fox News is actually taking a step towards actual "fair and balanced," as opposed to "biased as hell and proud"?

Y'know, if Fox News actually only said, "Hell, yeah, we're a conservative news organization, and we're proud of that", I'd have no problem with them. I probably still wouldn't watch, I'd probably still think O'Reilly and Hannity are pricks, but I wouldn't object to them conceptually.

Its their presentation of themselves as 'fair and balanced' when they are clearly a right-wing news source that gets to me.

For what its worth, several of my more thoughtful and intelligent conservative friends will readily admit Fox News is biased. Its only the tiny-brained conservatives that insist its unbiased.

Oh, come on, you don't have to go that far to find the irony in Fox's popularity amongst the fundies.

After all, Fox, the are the same people who produce Family Guy, the Simpsons, American Dad, Arrested Development, Celebrity Boxing, and other fine televison fair such as Outrageous Behavior Caught On Tape. Fox is also the fine people behind such films as The Hills Have Eyes remakes, Borat, the Omen remakes, Date Movie, Grandma's Boy, Shallow Hal, From Hell, Monkeybone, There's Something About Mary, The Ful Monty, PCU, Naked Lunch, the War of the Roses, Porky's and Porky's Revenge, and, well, I could go on and on and on.

The point is that every single one of those TV shws and movies have been damn near universally condemned by the Christin right. Yet because Fox provides the Faux News Channel, Fox is a great and awesome company. Why is it that the fundies can't see that Faux New is just a money-making venture for Fox?

Reading this from Europe, most of what the US call 'left-wing' seems far too far the right to be classed as mainstream politics.

Yes, this is the country where universal health care is considered far too left-wing an idea to ever work. As far as media, I think it's a matter of right-wingers ranting about the "liberal media" for so long that it's taken for granted -- so the media keep marching to the right without ever shedding the perception that they're "liberal" (and thus justifying a further move to the right). It also doesn't help that American liberals are often called "the left" (even by the liberals themselves).
