I think that all religions go through cycles of liberal and dogmatic. The problem is liberal religion is easy to shoot down through things like science. So during the liberal periods of Islam we get sufis and people like Rumi who actively questioned the Koran and the crazy science that pointed out concepts such as the theory on light having a speed. Then it slowly became more fanatical as seen in the works of Tuareg Moors (who damaged the statues of Andalusia because they followed the 10 commandments to the letter) and as seen in people like Babur and Ghazni. Then it mellowed out again in the middle mughals before they sealed their own downfall through the fanatic Aurangzeb. The collapsing Mughal empire led to the beauty of the Lucknow Caliphate which eventually joined India after being a puppet state of the British. Christianity is much the same way. It will mellow out, the way to defeat it is not with the sword but with the book. We need to educate people in Africa and slowly force Saudi to play ball.
