The Odyssey changed the story of a cunning adventurer into a drugged out veteran with PTSD regretting his colonialism....because modern day. We can't have heroes in a past sense because a modern audience couldn't comprehend them. So we change the heroes of the past, we drain the world of mythology of their spark and wonder. We are left with vague bumbling deeply troubled narcissists obsessing about political issues, regardless of what time period of even what fictional setting they are in.
