Picture of the Earth and a cross side by side. Title reads “It’s either this or this, but not both. Choose wisely.”

Why not have both , and 50 years ago, no less?:

It is a magnificent testimony to the evolution of humankind
If Dr. Buzz Aldrin can: and he's a Conservative Christian , what's your excuse, o OP...?!
And - soon after landing the LEM 'Eagle' on the Sea of Tranquility - he conducted the first religious ceremony: taking Communion, on another world. Ergo, not the Earth and the cross.
To quote another space explorer - Capt. Jean-Luc Picard - 'There are always other options' .
Does this perverse contempt for Creation and the reason and senses endowed to us really sound like something the Creator would say?
I do not think so.
But you know who it sounds exactly like?
A False God, envious and covetous of Creation, yet unable to take the cosmic throne, spreading lies in order to deceive and corrupt humanity to turn against Creation and against each other, all the while believing themselves to be fulfilling the will of God amd suppressing everything that tells them that what they do is wrong as lies of a false god…
You know, like this guy:

So... God wants us to destroy the world then? Suicide's a no-no but taking everyone with us and leaving a barren rock behind is divine work? And choosing instead to find joy and meaning in what exists, embrace the evil of free will, respect for life and all creation, and preserve it all for future generations is to spit in the face of God? How about no, you fucking insane nihilists? I think THIS is what you actually worship.

So, I don’t fully get it… Do we have to choose between either living on the (beautiful & fertile) world we’ve spent our entire existence on, or commiting mass suicide to get to heaven quicker, leaving a dead world in our wake?
Yeah, seems like a no-brainer to me: stay here and try to fix the mess we created! Seriously, as much as outer space calls out to be explored and colonized, I don’t want to kick earth in the ovaries and leave her for dead, you know.
So I can either have a planet to live on, or a pre-medieval torture device? Aw gee, that’s such a hard decision, can I think about it a little? [/sarc]
@Malingspann
No, obviously it’s a cross-shaped, planet-sized battlestation with the power to destroy entire actual planets. All to sacrifice them to the blood god, of course.
See as a scientist who finds our world marvelous, this kind of thinking turned me of religion pretty heavily to the point of not wanting to even believe in an afterlife anymore. It just leads to people disregarding our beautiful planet as some craphole they are only on to be punished or to ‘save’ others via conversion. And this attitude towards the world then leads to active disdain and even (in my opinion) wishes for its destruction asap. It’s sickening. Live as though there is no afterlife, that doesn’t stop you from believing in it. That’s my motto (though I actually lost interest in believing in afterlifes. If there is one I’ll let myself be surprised one way or the other).
Confused?
