Because they think it somehow sanctifies their hateful remarks. I've met so many of these people who truly believe they can say the most hurtful, offensive, and insulting things and make it "all better" by saying "I speak in love!"

And as far as what is said in Corinthians, did Paul ever explicitly condemn homosexuals? It's my understanding that he was referring to male prostitutes and pederasts. So whose word is more important, Jesus, who said nothing about the subject, or some mortal douchebag who was pretty goddamn ambiguous about the subject anyways?
Christ says no such thing in any version of the story. The Pharisee Saul (so-called St. Paul) says some nasty stuff, hearkening back to the legalistic horseshit of the Old Testament... but Christ established a New Covenant, right?

Jesus says much more about loving your neighbors and treating other people as you would treat Jesus.
The term "phobia" suggests and irrational fear. Even a casual look at history reveals that when religious fanatics (or at least insincere folks who can out up a convincing front) assume political power there is ALWAYS repression, terror and usually agonizing death. The recipients of the aforementioned abuse are often just peaceful people with non-confirming ideals, or just convenient targets for inquisitors looking to justify their jobs
And here's the kicker: it does not matter how much the scriptures of the religion in question talks about love, peace or justice. Once its groupies assume political power, all of that goes right out the window. Now, consider how close the Christian groupies are to assuming power here in the USA and you will understand why my fear of them is anything but irrational.
