The National Organization for Marriage is using the voice and image of the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr., in a new ad that urges Minnesota voters to support gubernatorial candidate Tom Emmer, who wants a public vote against marriage equality.
According to The Minnesota Independent, NOM president Brian Brown said in a statement Thursday, “We want the voters of Minnesota to know the facts about their rights and where the candidates stand on marriage. Just as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., fought for the civil rights of Americans, we echo his words to give people the ballot and let the people vote!”

Yes, because nothing says Martin Luther King like discriminating against other people and restricting their freedoms...
He didn't just want African-Americans to come out of the valley of despair, it was ALL people.
Oh for fucks sake!
There are no words to describe the stupidity permeating US politics, imbeciles!
There is no other country I know of who elects mentally sick people to congress, people who are so out of touch with reality they have no clue even about something as simple as the first amendment.
I actually hope every damn retarded teabagger on the ballot gets elected to Congress because dumbfuckistan really deserve the people you vote for!
You want mentally retarded morons to run your country? Don't fucking come and complain when they destroy it!
Don't have healthcare? Your own fault!
Don't have a job? Your own fault!
Your house under foreclosure? Your own fault!
Can't afford to retire? Your own fault!
Lost family in a war lately? Your own fault!
It's your own fault for giving these morons literally unlimited power to ruin your life and you love it and vote for them, over and over and over. So don't come and tell me you don't deserve the outcome!
You want to use Martin Luther King as an example for yourselves voting to take away the rights of a minority.
I'm not sure if you actually don't understand the civil rights struggle or if you're just an asshole, but either way I know there is no hope for you. Go die in a fire.
And I'm sure Dr. King is spinning in his grave with such velocity, you can hear the whirring sound.
Quit hijacking people who were for freedom and equality, and applying them to your anti-freedom hatred! And that goes especially for people like King who are dead and thus, are unable to defend themselves!
Why don't you just cut out the middleman and go piss on his grave directly, asshole. Might as well use Gandhi in a pro-war rally while you're butchering everything great people ever stood for. Hell, you jerks have already been using Jesus as a symbol of hate and greed for a while now so why should I expect any different for MLK?
"Just as Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., fought for the civil rights of Americans, we echo his words to give people the ballot and let the people vote!"
You realize that in King's time, the majority of Americans were against equal rights for African Americans, right? That was the big problem.
Civil rights are not something that should be voted on.
In other words, analogy fail.
One of Dr. King's closest friends and advisers, Bayard Rustin, was an openly gay man. So, in other words, Mr. Brown, you're an idiot.
So Martin Luther King was in favor of bigotry now? I never knew this...
@ Headache:
And those of us who are rational people and complain about the things you mentioned are the very people who do not vote for the whackjobs. I and every other American here is offended by your comments. Do you have any concept of not blaming the whole for the actions of a vocal minority? I don't know where you are from, but I don't go around saying that everyone in your country is a pretentious snob who looks down on everyone else. Can you at least reciprocate the courtesy?
And one last thing. Martin Luther King? He was an American . So there.

While MLK's niece is anti-gay, MLK was pro equality for all (even gays and lesbians.) In fact King's widow is against gay marriage bans.

You know that the institutionalized racism was in King's day had public support. It took the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and National Voting Rights Act of 1965 to destroy the last remains of the Jim Crow Laws.
Civil rights should never be voted on.
Fuck you... just FUCK you!
You're taking civil rights from people, not giving them to people like MLK did.
This is absolutely disgusting. I can't imagine a greater insult to MLK than to use his image to promote discrimination and hate. NOM sucks so hard it's difficult to comprehend.
I don't usually say this, but please die in a fire, all of you.
Oh, I get it! Everyone you like is MLK, and everyone you don't like is Hitler, whether or not these analogies make any sense at all. Now that's some rational discourse for you!
we echo his words to give people the ballot and let the people vote
Yeah. Dam' right! And let's give people a vote on whether to let you keep your guns and what church you can go to, too.
You don't have the right to vote on other people's rights, Brian. You haven't lost that right, because you never had it.
You don't actually want us to be able to vote on your freedom of speech, your right to bear arms, your freedom of religion, etc...do you?
Frankly, I don't really care what Dr. King's opinion of homosexuality is, though I hope it would be as enlightened as the rest of his outlook.
It wasn't the issue of his time, and we shouldn't decide our own issues on the basis of what we conjecture dead men would say if they were alive. Your attempts to recast a civil rights issue as a populist one are sickening, as is your false banner of a noble American designed to thwart debate.
Like Old Viking said, civil rights are not bestowed by vote. Period.
Regarding MLK, lets hear what his wife said:
"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people. ... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King Jr. said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.' I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King Jr.’s dream, to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."
Coretta Scott King (1927-2006)
November 2003, 13th annual Creating Change Conference
And here a quote from MLK which I think quite fits NOM and other such groups:
"Like an unchecked cancer, hate corrodes the personality and eats away its vital unity. Hate destroys a man's sense of values and his objectivity. It causes him to describe the beautiful as ugly and the ugly as beautiful, and to confuse the true with the false and the false with the true."
Martin Luther King Jr., 1963
I guess I should start using Jerry Falwell to further my causes, he'd completely disagree with them, too.
And another hearty 'Fuck you!' to Headache.
Anyone else hear a sort of spinning sound from the earth? Well gosh, what could that be?
@Headache: Generalization: Ur doin it rite.
