And six feet off panel a black guy in a tailored suit has six officers on top of him while another man yells “I told you yesterday when you took his driver’s license and the day before when you impounded his car that he’s not trespassing, HE’S THE MANAGER OF MY BRANCH! The guy we fired for harassing half the women that come here is the one who keeps calling you! That’s him begging for change over there!”
Setting aside for a minute the unrelenting hatred for the poor and homeless the right wing have and their usual rhetoric that anyone who loses their job and ends up on the street only got there because they deserved it but how that tune can suddenly change just long enough to make disingenuous attacks like this or the oldest of scare chords about “stealing” jobs before going right back to putting the screws to the less fortunate the homeless white guy still has an advantage over any black person or indeed quite a number of white women who apply for work.
See, if he can get past the deliberate hurdles thrown at the homeless that make it harder to properly apply for a job when he fills out an application it will go in a filing cabinet and get read. His claimed skills will be considered and references will be checked if anything is in doubt. If a black man fills out an application odds are nothing on it will be taken at face value but not verified either and assumed to all be “affirmative action” which does not mean what you think it means. It will go right into a waste basket with a disgusted snort unless the company has an internal hiring quota to avoid accusations of racism through the shallowest means and frankly what’s on the resume isn’t going to matter because there will be no investment in them as an employee, they’ll just cycle through bodies before the probationary period is up so they don’t have to consider raises or benefits or have to put in the effort of coming up with a legitimate reason for firings. And if a woman applies for the job? Generally she’s either held in contempt for “neglecting” any theoretical children by working rather than staying at home or her attractiveness and supposed likelihood of accusing someone of sexual harassment based on her attractiveness (rather than the actual behaviour of anyone around her because that apparently never counts and is chalked up to women being hysterical or just lashing out at men) become the real factors of her employment. No, really. Women are advised never to put photos on their resume for this reason because even when other women are doing the hiring that’s how it ends up. And according to several studies women get treated like second stringers to men of exactly equal qualifications, offered lesser positions for lesser pay and generally will be assumed to be treating their career like a hobby or dating service they’re expected to drop at a moment’s notice to go and raise children.
Applying for the job at all will not be treated like an insult to the employer as it does non white non males. And they will always be compared to a theoretical white male of extraordinary and from everything I have ever seen in my years working at various jobs entirely unrealistic standards of skill and work ethic that they are “stealing” the job from meaning that whatever productivity they display is treated not as an achievement or gain but as payment towards a debt to the theoretical white man that they stole the job from. Working is bizarrely viewed a zero-sum effort at best rather than an actual contribution to society.
